Bevan Beats #20
by Ashley Hobley
Welcome to Bevan Beats! This is a fortnightly article and accompanying playlist from us at the Explosion Network. It aims to enable us the ability to share the music we love, discuss a certain theme, or share what we are simply listening to in our everyday lives. You'll be able to find the playlist on Spotify.
Time for another eclectic collection of songs put together by me, Ashley Hobley, for your listening pleasure. Enjoy
01.) Hearts Beat Loud - Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons
The titular song from the 2018 film Hearts Beat Loud is a catchy song that, in the film, comes out of a jam session between the father and daughter played by Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons. I suspect the only reason this song wasn’t up for an Oscars this year was that there was an issue with eligibility because it is clearly worth of being considered as one of the best songs from a motion picture in the last year. Kiersey Clemons has a really lovely voice and the lyrics are touching. As Nick Offerman says in the film “It’s a mood piece.”
02.) Invincible - Aminé
The Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack is one of the best movie soundtracks of recent memory with a number of great artists like Post Malone, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne providing material. While “Sunflower” and “What’s Up Danger” are the most prominent songs from the album, I really like Invincible and enjoy the uplifting lyrics.
03.) Face My Fears - Hikaru Utada & Skrillex
I played Kingdom Hearts III, so this needed to be in this playlist. That opening cinematic that features this song is incredible and, after several years of waiting, gets you straight back into the cray world of Kingdom Hearts.
04.) Love You So Bad - Ezra Furman
Ezra Furman has missing musical fingerprints all over the first season Netflix’s Sex Education, so much so that I had check out his catalogue out after binge watching the show. This track really stands out as a fun song, even though my favourite song of his from the series, “Every Feeling” is unreleased and unavailable on streaming services.
05.) I Try - Hockey Dad feat. Hatchie
This is a really cool cover of Macy Gray’s “I Try” that Hockey Dad and Hatchie did for Triple J’s Like A Version. I really dig how it ends with the slow build to that guitar solo and the arrangement for the final chorus.
06.) Hazy Shade of Winter - Gerard Way feat. Ray Toro
Gerard Way, for those that don’t know, was the lead singer of the now retired My Chemical Romance and also a comic book writer, known most prominently for creating The Umbrella Academy with Gabriel Bá. So it’s only fitting that with the release of the TV adaption of that comic on Netflix Gerard Way would provide some music, choosing to release this cover of a Simon & Garfunkel song with help from this My Chemical Romance bandmate Ray Toro.
07.) Dinosaurs - Ruby Fields
A really cool song that I stumbled across that I feel is really relatable. When the rest of the instruments kick in, it’s really powerful.
08.) I’m Just Being Honest - Weezer
I’ve been listening to Weezer’s recently released Black Album. I’m not a huge Weezer fan but I like this track which is pretty much about speaking your mind, even if you kinda come across as a dick.
09.) Good Lord - Birds of Tokyo
I’ve been a fan of Birds of Tokyo since Universe back in 2008. I’m excited to hear some new music from them.
10.) the idea of you - mxmtoon
Another track that I managed to stumble across. I think someone had it in their Instagram story. mxmtoon is a oakland-based singer, songwriter, and ukulele player who has amassed a large following online through Youtube and other avenues. This song is super relatable and is about dealing with a crush for so long that you start to question if you still like them or some made up version of them.
11.) Hell or High Water - Billy Raffoul
This song featured in a recent Days Gone trailer and I have listened to it a lot since. I’m not terribly interested in the game, and I don’t think this song was used well in the trailer but I still really like it.
12.) Delta - Mumford and Sons
After listening to this album several more times since I compiled my last playlists, I come to love this song. I really like how it builds and some of the lyrics really strike a chords with me.
