Christmas 2018

by Dylan Blight (Bevan Beats #16)

Welcome to Bevan Beats! This is a fortnightly article and accompanying playlist from us at the Explosion Network. It aims to enable us the ability to share the music we love, discuss a certain theme, or share what we are simply listening to in our everyday lives. You'll be able to find the playlist on Youtube and on Spotify.

It’s close to Christmas time so there was no way this Bevan Beats couldn’t be a collection of Christmas songs. I’ve gone for a bit of a journey and a collective-mess of genres, years and styles here so the playlist will be a journey.

Please enjoy these songs and have yourself a happy holiday and Merry Christmas if you celebrate.

Christmas Rappin’ - Kurtis Blow

Christmas Rappin’ is basically Kurtis Blow’s hit ‘The Breaks’ but a Christmas variation and that’s perfectly fine. A good way to start of this playlist.

run-dmc-1988-portrait-billboard-1548.jpg

We were all in the mood so we had a little food
And a joke, and a smoke, and a little bit of wine
When I thought I heard a hoof on the top of the roof
Could it be or was it me? I was feeling super fine
So I went to your attic where I thought heard the static
On the chance that the prance was somebody breaking in
But the noise on the top was a reindeer clop
Just a trick St. Nick, and I let the sucker in

Christmas In Hollis - Run-D.M.C.

Some of the most famous Christmas lyrics EVER. I’m not even making a joke.

It was December 24th on Hollis ave in the dark
When I see a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my god, an ill reindeer

I Won’t Be Home For Christmas - Blink-182

A lot of the songs later on this playlist are rude and NSFW at all, but this Blink-182 song kicks that off with some raunchy lyrics and fun, just without the amount of swearing that’s to come.

Well, I guess it's not cool to freak on Christmas Eve
'Cause the cops came and arrested me
They had an unfair advantage
And even though the jail didn't have a tree
Christmas came a night early
'Cause a guy named bubba unwrapped my package

Oi To The World - No Doubt

Gwen Stefani has done ‘proper’ Christmas cover, but we haven’t reached the point of the playlist yet where we want those in, we’re still in alt territory, so how about when Gwen was a bit louder and she covered The Vandals ‘Oi To The World’

If God came down on Christmas Day
I know exactly what He'd say
He'd say oi to the punks and oi to the skins
Oi to the world and everybody wins

Santa Claus Goes To The Ghetto - Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, Big Tray Deee, Bad Azz, daz dillinger

For some reason, Death Row Records put out a Christmas album. I like to picture Suge Knight pitching the idea to everyone in a boardroom meeting.

Now who the hell is this in this blue bandana
Messin' with the boxes that's up under the three
Look like Santa Claus been crossed to a woman to me
Now I'm comin' to see, the whole picture gettin' clearer
How we have messed; I says best get nearer
Mirror, mirror, please, it's seemed I've be deceived
And thank the same trick for the gifts I receive
So I creep back, and act like I ain't even peeped it
This'll be me and Mom's private secret

Merry Muthafuckin’ Xmas - Eazy-E

Eazy-E did a Christmas jingle too back in the day post-NWA and if you can kinda think what that probably sounds like — that’s what it sounds like.

the69eyeschristmassinglejpg-1.jpg

Merry Christmas muthafucka!
Merry muthafuckin' Christmas and a ho ho ho!
While I'm ridin' that cot under the missile toe
Now dashin' through the snow
In a candy red top 6-4
Over the hills I go
Laughin' at this hoe

Christmas In New York City - The 69 Eyes

This song from The 69 Eyes was only released last year but I remembered it instantly when trying to put together some Christmas song. It’s not particularly written well or anything but it’s simple enough and has The 69 Eyes sound, so it’s a good one.

Don't wanna be, alone
Christmas in New York City
When nobody's home
Christmas in New York City

All I Want For Christmas Is You - My Chemical Romance

I dunno the numbers, but ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has been covered more times than probably necessary at this point, but this version by My Chemical Romance is my personal favourite.

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm askin for
I just want to see my baby standing right outside my door
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true

Grinch 2000 - Busta Rhymes, Jim Carrey

Jim Carey and Busta Rhymes did a song for the Carey led Grinch film released in 2000 and it’s basically Busta trying to question The Grinch on why he is the way he is — and why is that Mr Grinch?

Okay for the record
What the hell made you like that?
So grouchy and grimy
How everything about you is whack
Ay yo I know you all can tell
From all the talk from his mouth
You better set some big traps
Around the gifts in your house

Ballin’ On Xmas - Jim Jones

‘A Dipset X-Mas’ is one of the better overall Christmas Hip-Hop albums and this track has been used in several movies/trailer before so you may recognise the beat.

They say Santa knows who was being naughty or nice
I hope I don't get penalized for what I did with the rice
Name Bundles -- you can just imagine the life
I love Christmas -- I can just imagine the white

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! - Frank Sinatra, B. Swanson Quartet

The best version of this song. And yes we’ll finish off the Christmas festivities with some more classic tunes and this is the way to start that.

la-et-ms-sam-smith-have-yourself-a-merry-little-christmas-20141209.jpg

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Sam Smith

The most famous and classic Christmas song had a version released by Sam Smith in 2014 and it’s my go-to for a classic Christmas song and the best way to finish off this playlist.

Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest place
So have yourself a merry little Christmas
