Extremely OK Games, the studio behind what some consider to be GOTY 2018’s Celeste, has announced that its next project, Earthblade, has been cancelled.
In a post on the developer’s website, they shared the sad news that Earthblade was indeed cancelled. They had come to this decision in December but decided to wait until sharing the news.
Maddy, co-creator of the studio, and Celeste said that the cancellation came because of a fracture between some of the forming team, specifically over Celste’s IP rights, which has now been resolved. However, they couldn’t decide whether to move forward with the project until near the end of 2024.
“We eventually reached a resolution, but both parties also agreed in the end that we should go our separate ways. Pedro is now working on his game Neverway, which you should check out – we’ve played it, and it’s very promising. […] If you were excited about Earthblade and angry about its cancellation, Pedro and the Neverway team aren’t the enemy, and anyone who treats them as such isn’t welcome in any EXOK community.
So what’s next? The team is back to prototyping and wants to work on smaller-scale projects. Sadly, this has happened, but as for “looking on the bright side,” there is potential for different games in the future from the team behind Celeste and what would have been Earthblade.
