Following a long line of rumours for at least a couple of years, the MMO set in the world of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series has been revealed, and it’s titled Horizon Steel Frontiers.
The news broke on Thursday thanks to the video being published early and The Verge picking it up; however, the game has now received an official reveal.
Horizon Steel Frontiers is being developed by NCSoft, a Korean developer, in partnership with Sony. The reveal video shows a cinematic before actual gameplay, and developers talk about the inspiration and ideas behind this new MMORPG. This game was first developed for mobile, with a PC release also coming, as is the case with most big MMORPGs these days.
The gameplay is structured around big fights with the machines, and in some respects, it reminded me of the Monster Hunter series, as one of the developers discusses strategy and your role in the fight. There are some new things here; for instance, it seems the Pullcaster can now be used to swing your character through the air.
Horizon Steel Frontiers takes place in a new region called ‘Deathlands,’ which is apparently inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Here, your player character will be teaming up with other players, all hunting for resources in a familiar-looking location full of animal-inspired machines.
There’s a lot that will look familiar and exciting to fans of the Horizon franchise, while some elements, in particular the character design, stand out as the series is developed under a new team. The custimization of your character incldues being able to adjust their makeup, a detail that you wouldn’t expect to see in a Horizon game, or something the characters would even think about really, but nonetheless, it’s here and the whole vibe of the character designs — at least the female ones seen in the video, are for a better or worse term, very ‘yasified.’ I can’t picture them standing next to Aloy, or any of the characters from the main game and having it feel normal.
The world and combat seen in the announcement video all look like Horizon, however, and there’s an element of excitement to being able to jump into a hunt with friends from the device in your pocket. But what do you think? Let me know in the comments section below.
