Sony Finally Allows Crossplay on PS4
by Dylan Blight
Sony has today announced that ‘select titles’ will be receiving crossplay support on PS4 and the first of these titles is the game that caused the most fuss, Fortnite.
Epic Games Fortnite as of today has entered cross-play beta support. What exactly is ‘beta’ about cross-play support is unknown.
John Kodera, President and Global CEO of SIE took to the PlayStation Blog to explain that after much research, Sony had come to the conclusion that not only is crossplay something players want (really), but also a feature they have been able to implement in a way that makes sense for them.
The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.
The post continued to note that the policy change represents a “huge policy change at SIE” which, of course it does, however, Kodera noted more details would be coming in the future to explain the beta and what other titles would be supported.
It’s a pretty big deal and a tale of consumers sticking up for themselves and actually getting the outcome they respectfully deserve.
What say you? Jumping into some Fortnite PS4 x Xbox x Switch x PC soon?
