Facebook and Oculus Studios have announced their purchase of Beat Games, the studio behind the VR smash-hit, Beat Saber.
Through a blog post, Mike Verdu the Director of Content at Oculus Studios has explained the long and short of what this means for Beat Games and Beat Saber going forward.
Most importantly, fans of Beat Saber on non-Oculus devices shouldn’t be worried about the decision as Verdu wrote that:
“Beat Games will continue to ship content and updates for Beat Saber across all currently supported platforms, now with even more support from Facebook.”
Although you could read into the ‘supported platforms’ as it wouldn’t come to any ones if any other companies happened to join the VR game in the future.
The major way this could affect Beat Saber going forward is the limiting of the mod community which currently uses the PC version of Beat Saber to expand the games library with modders mapping out songs from Eminem to Skrillex. Verdu doesn’t clearly say what will change, but it sounds like a cut-down on infringement of copyright might come as he explains:
“We’re going to do our best to preserve the value that mods bring to the Beat Saber player base. As a reminder, our most recent policy updates give more clarity to how developer mode is intended to be used, such as helping developers build their apps or for enthusiasts to explore new concepts. It is not intended for engaging in piracy or illicit modding, including mods that infringe on third-party IP rights or contain malicious code.”
The blog post also confirmed that 360 level is still coming to Beat Saber in December and more music is also set to release this year.
