First Look at “Dark Phoenix” & “Holmes and Watson” + More (Trailer Round Up)
Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.
Sigh. I want to like this, I really do. It just feels a little hollow and like it is going through the motions. Nothing really made me think they are doing anything new with the X-Men or this idea. The fact that they are doing a Dark Phoenix storyline (again) after only 1 film with this new Jean Grey can’t help but make this feel rushed and cash-grabby. Some elements are interesting, like Beast appearing to go against Xavier, but there wasn’t really anything we haven’t seen before. But I still kinda want to see it…
X-Men: Dark Pheonix is scheduled to release in cinemas 6 June 2019
Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and be a hero to the world.
This was a really long look. I appreciate that they showed to extended scenes but I can’t help but wonder why. I’m onboard with the treasure hunt aspect and the giant sea monster mounts but Black Manta and his cronies does not look good. What is he even doing in this film? Is he working for Orm (Patrick Wilson) or is he independent? You have to admit, that OG Aquaman suit looks pretty great.
Aquaman is scheduled to release in cinemas 13 December 2018
Under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa, newly crowned light heavyweight champion Adonis Creed faces off against Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago.
So good. When that remix of DMX’s “Who We Be” kicks in with that slight Rocky theme, I got goosebumps. This trailer does a soild job of building up the Dragos as the antagonists but it is interesting that we haven’t yet seen either on of them speak. Is Florian Munteanu being hidden to add an air of mystery or because he isn’t close to the same standard as Michael B. Jordan?
Creed II releases in cinemas 29 November 2018
HOLMES & WATSON
Detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson join forces to investigate a murder at Buckingham Palace. They soon learn that they have only four days to solve the case, or the queen will become the next victim.
This looks amusing, but is it going to be entertaining and funny for 90+ minutes? I don’t think so. I suspect that this is just going to feel like a bunch of skits thread to together with a basic murder mystery plot.
Holmes and Watson releases in cinemas 26 December 2018
SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
Spider-Man crosses parallel dimensions and teams up with the Spider-Men of those dimensions to stop a threat to all reality.
GIVE THIS TO ME NOW! Seriously, this looks amazing! Jake Johnson as the OG Peter Parker is great casting and John Mulaney as Spider-Ham is just perfect. Love the little nods to Spider-Man 2 like the train and the car through the window. I am in love with the animation style. I will happily drop a lot of money of the inevitable art book.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse releases in cinemas 13 December 2018
A team of young superheroes led by Nightwing (formerly Batman's first Robin) form to combat evil and other perils.
This looks better. This trailer looks more superheroey than the dark brooding first trailer. We get a bit more of a look at Starfire and Beast Boy and I kinda like them. The animal CGI doesn’t look terrible and Starfire’s new look is growing on me. Sure, with all their odd hair colours, this group sticks out like a sore thumb but I am still hopeful and based on some early reviews, I have good reason to be.
Titans is coming to Netflix soon
A tale of the bungling of Armageddon features an angel, a demon, an 11-year-old Antichrist, and a doom-saying witch.
This has me interested. Who doesn’t want to see The Odd Couple crossed with the biblical end of the world? David Tennant and Michael Sheen appear to have been perfectly cast. The CGI looks a bit hit and miss but that could be improved by the time it is released
Good Omens is coming to Amazon Prime Video in 2019
STAR WARS RESISTANCE
Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot for the Resistance, is tasked with a top secret mission to investigate the First Order, a growing threat in the galaxy.
This looks like a lot of fun which I suspect may rub some Star Wars fans up the wrong way. There seems to have a lighter tone which the new art style works with but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get more serious as the series continues. More Poe & BB-8 is definitely not a bad thing.
Star Wars Resistance debuts on Foxtel’s Disney XD on 14 October 2018
SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER
She-Ra, Princess of Power, leads a rebellion to free her land of Etheria from the monstrous invaders the Horde.
Interesting look cartoon. I’m intrigued by the story the premise of a girl learning that she is on the wrong side of a war. The She-Ra design looks good -- even if fanboys on the internet get upset -- and it seems to have a story purpose. Expect this to do very well on Netflix. Interesting to see that the showrunner is Noelle Stevenson, writer of the comic series Lumberjanes. She’s only 26. I am old.
