Top 5 TV Moments of 2019 — header

Spoilers below for Big Little Lies: Season 2, Chernobyl, Fleabag: Season 2, Game of Thrones, and Stranger Things: Season 3. Reader beware.

The following Top 5 list was compiled by Dylan Blight and Ashley Hobley.

Stranger Things S3 — Steve and Robin in the bathroom

5.) Bathroom Scene

Stranger Things: Season 3, Episode 7

In a crazy show about kids with powers and monsters from another world, this human moment is the best of the season. After being pumped with drugs, Steve (Joe Keery) and Robin (Maya Hawke) are coming down after puking a lot off-screen, mercifully. On a cinema bathroom floor, Steve lays out his feelings for Robin. Robin gently turns him down and subtly reveals that she is gay—a revelation that blows Steve’s mind for a moment.

When Steve starts to joke with Robin about her high school crush, I was so relieved. This pair was the highlight for me this season, and although I would have loved them together, this scene is so brilliantly performed by these two young actors that I can’t help but love the choice to go in this direction.

Big Little Lies S2 — courtroom

4.) Courtroom Battle

Big Little Lies: Season 2, Episode 7

Nicole Kidman deserves an Emmy for her performance in Season 2 of Big Little Lies—most specifically for the courtroom scene where she fights to keep her children. The courage and strength shown by Celeste this season turns her into as much a superhero as anyone in the Marvel or DC catalogue.

After surviving years of abuse from her ex-husband—and learning he raped one of her friends—she has to stand in court and take blow after blow from her now-dead husband’s mother, played amazingly by Meryl Streep. Celeste chooses to be her own lawyer in the custody case, and when she steps out onto that courtroom floor in the Season 2 finale, she becomes her own saviour.

Fleabag S2 — the confessional

3.) The Confessional Scene

Fleabag: Season 2, Episode 4

Some may love this scene because it’s the first time Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) and the Priest (Andrew Scott) kiss—taboo and sexually charged after several episodes of build-up. For me, it’s the monologue that precedes it that makes this one of the year’s best moments. The Priest convinces Fleabag to step into the confessional and share her sins. She confesses to some lies and jokes about sexual misdeeds.

When she reveals that she’s frightened, the scene goes to another level. Phoebe is incredible as she admits she wants someone to tell her how to live because she’s scared she’s doing it wrong—maybe Fleabag’s most honest moment and something incredibly relatable. Of course, then the Priest tells her to kneel and it gets hot, which is also good.

Chernobyl — men clearing graphite from the reactor roof

2.) Clearing the Roof

Chernobyl: Episode 4

The entire series of Chernobyl is one unbelievably shocking and sad event after another, but the roof sequence is the most thrilling.

Given two minutes, men run out onto the reactor roof to clear debris and graphite off the building; when the bell rings, you sprint back as fast as possible. The two minutes limit the chance of death—anything longer is considered too risky.

What makes the scene so memorable is how daunting the task looks as the camera follows a soldier with a shovel. He stumbles over several pieces of debris before managing to flick one tiny chunk, trips, and barely makes it back inside within his window.

Game of Thrones S8 — Arya and the Night King

1.) Arya Kills the Night King

Game of Thrones: Season 8, Episode 3

One show was going to define 2019, whether it was terrible or fantastic: Game of Thrones and its final season. We had mixed feelings among ourselves here at the Explosion Network, but it’s hard to deny it was a phenomenon each week as everyone gathered to praise—or scream about—each episode.

One moment stood out as our pick for the best TV moment of 2019: Arya (Maisie Williams) driving her dagger into the Night King. Across the world, there were either cheers or boos as Arya pulled off the drop-and-grab while held at the neck by the Night King.

To me, it’s easily the most memorable moment of the year, and Ashley agreed when we made this Top 5 list. No other TV moment in 2019 made me lean forward and want to cheer more. I was so happy it was Arya, and the way the entire scene was put together had me on the edge of my seat. Do I care it wasn’t Jon? No—I never believed it was going to be Jon (Kit Harington). Arya is more kick-ass than Jon anyway!
