2024 was another great year of television, making the task of creating this list tricky with Ashley, Dylan and Jacob all having different tastes and interests. A lot of these shows have featured heavily this week while a couple have come from the clouds to land on the list.

Here are our picks for the Best TV Shows of 2023.

10. Poker Face: Season 1

The best murder mystery show airing at the moment, Poker Face stars Natasha Lyyone in the role she was born to play. Each week, Charlie must figure out who is behind a murder that she has stumbled upon with her gift of telling when people are lying. With a star-studded guest cast each episode, each episode feels like a small movie with no two feeling very familiar. Anyone says this show is bad is talking bullshit!

9. The White Lotus: Season 2

A new White Lotus hotel and a mostly new cast of characters create another fantastic television series from Mike White. Yes, Jennifer Coolidge is fantastic as the returning Tanya. Still, the new stories and bond formed between the Di Grasso men on a family trip, Mia and Lucia’s entangled web within the hotel, Portia’s wild weekend and Harper and Cameron’s back-and-forth group dynamics draw you in episode after episode. With an enigmatic Theo James joining the cast alongside the stellar Aubrey Plaza, the season was always primed to be good, but it proved White Lotus could be more than a one-season hit.

8. The Fall of The House of Usher

Mike Flanagan’s 2023 Netflix series is one of his best. Adapting short stories of Edgar Allan Poe and intertwining them under The Fall of The House of Usher, it’s a beautiful, horrible, macabre tale of an ultra-rich family and their downfall. The cast is phenomenal, with Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell and Carla Gugino all phenomenal leads backed by the rest of the stellar supporting cast. Some of the kills are disturbing, but the drama and story behind them all draw you in and keep you watching the next episode one after another just to see how deep House Usher’s sins are buried.

7. Ted Lasso: Season 3

Ted and the team are back, and this season’s focus is pulling away from the coach and focusing more on the team and the surrounding characters. The story of Richmond’s Greyhounds and their journey continues by introducing some new characters and reintroducing some older ones. The show brings with it more heartwarming and heartbreaking episodes; I was on the edge of my seat this entire season. I am not a soccer fan, but I was cheering Richmond as the team began its fight through the premier league. Hardships and adversity are overcome both on and off the field as the metaphorical words from previous seasons become actions, and we see the conclusion and closure. This is a show I will be watching again and again.

6. Shrinking: Season 1

Who would have thought one of the shows of the year would be a therapist who’s hit rock bottom after the death of his wife? While it doesn’t sound like a source of hilarity, creators Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein have made a show that not only has plenty of laughs, but also explores many serious subjects and delves into how people deal with grief. With an outstanding ensemble cast led by Segel and Harrison Ford, Shrinking is a welcome tool to help with your mental health.

5. One Piece: Season 1

One Piece is one of the longest-running animes; when Netflix announced that they were doing a live-action, I had much trepidation about it. In a massive surprise and an awesome one at that, the show was fantastic. Season One sees the Straw Hats crew form around Luffy, and they couldn’t have cast it better. The weird and wonderful world of One Piece comes alive from the weird snail phones and the oddball pirates. Netflix’s One Piece live-action series has set a great standard for any live-action series to follow. Adding in many nods to the anime and making it concurrent with the series at large, I cannot wait to see what they do with season two and see how they design some of the other crew members, especially Chopper and Franky.

4. Gen V: Season 1

L to R: Lizze Broadway, Jaz Sinclair, Maddie Phillips

Godolkin University is a prodigious school for supes, welcoming new heroes yearly and training them to become the next face of Vought International. This adventure starts with a new hero, Marie Moreau, a hemokinetic or someone who can manipulate blood. Gen U has seen many of the famous Seven graduates from their ranks, and this is one of the driving forces of the school, or so it seems. The school has a focus on supes and their abilities as well as a leader board that our main protagonist wants to gain notoriety by being number one. There is something sinister happening at this university to. After a wild night and a tragic death, Marie and her new friends begin to search out the truth. Gen V is a gritty and bloody masterpiece, and I cannot wait for season two.

3. Silo: Season 1

One of the most interesting new world introduced this year and some of the most compelling mysteries to hit a streaming service this year. In an underground silo, generations of people have been living after some sort of apocalyptic event. Silo does a stellar job of introducing new mysteries and providing just enough answers, or answers that just lead to new questions. Rebecca Ferguson is great as the former engineer, now sheriff, as are the great cast, including Rashida Jones and David Oyelowo who only appear in the first episode. I look forward to learning all the secrets when the show returns in the near future.

2. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

When Netflix announced they were doing a Scott Pilgrim adaptation, I wasn’t that excited. Although I loved the movie and the comic series, I felt like doing something other than redoing that story would offer anything new in animation. I felt I wouldn’t gravitate towards the characters and story as much now I’m in my 30s. However, what Bryan Lee O’Malley manages to do with his own material in this animated series is fantastic and the biggest surprise of 2023. It lulls you into thinking it will be exactly the direct adaption page for the page you think it’ll be and then doing something really unique.

1. The Last of Us

I guess it isn’t overly surprising that a website with multiple video game podcasts would have the most successful video game adaption at the top of the list. Expectations were high for this adaptation of a beloved video game and the creative nailed it with their faithful vision, especially in their depictions of the clickers which are rightfully terrifying.. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are superb as Joel and Ellie while a great ensemble cast help to tell this beloved story. The show managed to brilliantly recreate some of the hardest hitting moments of the game and left us all heartbroken again and again.
