The top three games of the year for us (slight spoilers) in this list are all indies, and how good is that? There are, of course, some big studio games in this list, just look at Monster Hunter Wilds starting off the countdown below. But it’s been a great year for indie and experimental releases, and some big wins there. Next year, we’re expecting some big AAA games to take up the space and lives of a lot of us.

Here’s our picks for the Top 30 Video Games released in 2025.

28.) Tempopo

Play

The latest game from Witch Beam, the Australian developers of Unpacking, is a puzzle game in the vein of Lemmings, ChuChu Rocket! and The Incredible Machine in which you help a group of blobs named Tempopo make their way around courses by setting action tiles for them to walk onto, collecting followers on their way to the exit. A cozy game with a fantastic soundtrack that will have you incredibly relaxed as the Tempopos bounce around the screen.

27.) Lost Records: Bloom & Rage

Play

Lost Records stands out for its mature themes and its older cast of female characters at its heart. It’s simply not a group of characters you usually see in many art forms, let alone video games. And although the game is a mix of both current-day and playing-out memories, the flashback gameplay is used solely to reinforce the characters in the present day: the choices they made in their lives and how they’re acting now. Lost Records: Bloom & Rage does a great job of exploring identity, as well as our adoration of nostalgia and looking back on our younger years, in ways many narratives fail to do.

26.) Borderlands 4

Play

The hidden Planet Kairos unfolds, teeming with untold stories and breathtaking landscapes, as the daring Vault Hunters land, only to discover themselves ensnared by the ruthless Timekeepers Order and its thralls; unfortunate souls subjected to relentless mind control. As they fight side by side with a diverse array of local factions, the Vault Hunters become the catalysts for a fierce uprising against the tyrannical Timekeeper and his iron-fisted rule. Together, they fan the flames of rebellion, inspiring the oppressed inhabitants of Kairos to join their cause. With determination and courage, they lead a passionate charge to liberate the beleaguered world from the clutches of its malevolent oppressors, striving for a future where freedom reigns.

25.) Monster Train 2

Play

Monster Train 2 is a perfect example of iteration delivering something more beloved than the first game, without losing anything anyone loved about the first game. The art style, UI, and general vibe of the game and design haven’t changed, making it easy to jump in and start a new run. However, you saw that discovering things like the deployment phase takes away a lot of frustration; some of the roguelike structure can, and did, frustrate with the first game in the series. It’s Monster Train, which was already great, just now much better, and probably the best card-based roguelike you could have played in 2025. And I only say probably because there are so many released these days, and I haven’t played them all.

22.) Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Play

Rather than doing another Pokémon Legends game set in the past like Arceus was, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set in ‘modern’ times and brings new Mega Evolution Pokémon not seen in the main-line games, and introduces a fun day/night cycle. In the day, you’re catching Pokémon in designated areas, maybe completing some missions for characters, and at night, you’re doing battles to rise from Rank Z to Rank A and become the best trainer in Luminous City. The battle system sees a nice upgrade, while live-catching remains as fun as in the previous entry. The story here is also surprisingly deeper than you’d expect, and features a fun cast of characters.

15.) Mafia: The Old Country

Play

Taking things back to the open-world structure of Mafia III, the latest entry of the series goes all the way back to Sicily and the origins of organised crime that would make their way over to America, and sees the rise of families in future games. Spotting references and characters seen in future games is some of the fun, but the game stands on its own for its focus on character, its slower pace to build a cinematic design for its missions, and the research and authenticity that the team has put into the series.

-Dylan

14.) Mario Kart World

These unlikely allies forge a bond as they confront the shadowy organisation known as the Shimbaku, driven by their shared quest for revenge and a desire to restore balance to their fractured world.

As they navigate the intricacies of this clandestine, templar-backed group, their distinct fighting styles shine through. Nawi’s stealth and agility allow her to slip silently through the night, striking with precision and grace. At the same time, Yasuke’s mastery of the katana is a testament to his strength and discipline. Together, they embody a perfect fusion of cunning and might, determined to dismantle the Shimbaku’s grip on their homeland.

12.) Hollow Knight: Silksong

Play

Easily one of the most anticipated games in years, and easily one of, if not the most anticipated, indie game of all time, Hollow Knight: Silksong finally released in 2025 and brought the precision platforming, the deep and challenging combat, and boss fights that fans of the first game have been dying for. The world is deeper and expands in ways most couldn’t have expected, and, by all accounts, a game this anticipated managed to live up to fans’ expectations.

-Dylan

11.) DOOM: The Dark Ages

Play

The latest DOOM game goes medieval with a prequel game showing one of DOOM-Guy’s earliest adventures, and one that sees him armed with both a mace and a shield. Not changing up the gameplay too much from a glance, but when you’re playing it, DOOM: The Dark Ages feels more like the original games, compared to the previous two. Here, the ‘melee-forward’ combat challenges you to pace side-to-side, dodging attacks, all while moving forward to get in your enemies’ faces. When you’re locked in DOOM: The Dark Ages, it was some of the most exhilarating combat of the year.

10.) Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Play

After such a long wait, it was always going to be a big question if Metroid Prime 4: Beyond could deliver what fans wanted in 2025. And if what fans thought they wanted would even be as enjoyable so many years later, after the original trilogy of games. But Metroid Prime 4: Beyond manages to deliver a strong line of new elements, like stunning art direction and 4K visuals, tighter first-person combat, all while staying true to the core game design that has fans begging for more.

-Dylan

9.) South of Midnight

Play

South of Midnight is deep with folklore and culturally driven narrative, art, and music direction. It stands apart as one of the most creatively envisioned and delivered with intent projects of 2025. There isn’t a game like it that hits on these same themes and delivers such a unique artistic direction and vision. The characters are all layered, and the world and wisdom you’ll discover along the way are worth the adventure.

-Dylan

8.) Ball x Pitt

Play

For the category of: just one more game that caught me off guard in 2025, the clear winner is Ball x Pitt, which combines ball-breaking simplicity with roguelike elements, base-building, and general hecticness. When you begin the game and start to wrap your head around how different balls combine to create different combos and elements, that’s one thing; when you start unlocking new characters to play as, which bring their own strengths and weaknesses, all of which level up on their own, that’s where Ball x Pitt’s true magic begins to shine.

-Dylan

7.) Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

Play

In the sequel to Death Stranding, Kojima Productions tightens the mechanics and makes the ‘walking simulator’ elements that frustrated some players much easier to navigate by introducing vehicles and other tools earlier in the game. What isn’t made easier to get into, however, is the dense narrative, but if you can dive into the world of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, you discover one that expands on the original game’s themes, now with a deeper connection between Lou and Sam. It’s also a game that’s set in Australia, and that’s not something you see often.

-Dylan

6.) Avowed

Play

I loved exploring the world of Avowed, feeling rewarded as a player to learn more about its world and its political and religious ideology. And the game seemed to reward my interest, and lack of wanting to just b-line through the main story beats. And as is the case with all recent Obsidian RPGs, having companions ot care about, and getting to learn more about them if I chose, which I did, also makes the game a standout in a genre that often pushes one-note side-characters.

-Dylan

5.) Donkey Kong Bananza

Play

In an exciting partnership, Donkey Kong and Pauline embark on a thrilling adventure deep beneath the surface, where they confront the sinister organisation known as Void Co. This nefarious group has been ruthlessly exploiting the precious resources of banadium, threatening the delicate balance of their world. As they navigate the intricate underground labyrinth, our heroes encounter a host of new Kong villains, each more formidable than the last, all brought to life with a vibrant, Mario Odyssey-inspired aesthetic. With courage and teamwork, DK and Pauline must rise to the challenge and restore harmony to their realm.

-Jacob

4.) Ghost of Yotei

Play

A fierce mercenary named Atsu embarks on a relentless quest for vengeance against the notorious Yōtei Six, who ruthlessly slaughtered her family, leaving her as the sole survivor of their brutal attack. Haunted by grief and rage, Atsu embodies the vengeful spirit from Japanese folklore, a twisting blend of wrath and sorrow. As she navigates the breathtaking yet unforgiving landscapes around her, she grapples with her quest for justice and the heavy burden of embodying vengeance. Each step of her journey unveils not only her determination but also forces her to confront the profound weight of her purpose in a world that blends beauty with brutality.

-Jacob

3.) Hades II

Play

Hades was a massive commercial and critical success, so for the indie studio Supergiant to make a sequel that lives up to the original is a Herculean effort. Centred a round Melinoë, Princess of the Underworld and sister to Zagreus, she must fight her way through the underworld to confront Chronos, the Titan of Time, who has overthrown Hades as ruler of the underworld and is waging war against Olympus. With a greatly expanded world and story, a much bigger cast of characters, new gameplay elements and different resources to manage, Hades II is an incredible game in its own right and a worthy successor to a beloved title.

-Ashley

2.) Dispatch

Play

Once celebrated as a legendary hero, Mecca Man, known in civilian life as Robert Robertson, now grapples with hardship and a sense of directionlessness. Reduced to financial struggles and disillusionment, he embraces a new chapter in his life by joining the Superhero Dispatch Network. In this pivotal role, Robert is tasked with the critical responsibility of determining which heroes are best suited for various emergencies, all while navigating the intricate web of politics, alliances, and eccentric personalities that define the superhero community. The decisions he makes ripple through the larger narrative, shaping not only the outcomes of dire situations but also the fates and relationships of those involved.

1.) Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Play

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 blends a new take on RPG combat with an utterly unique narrative and world, creating one of the best games released in recent years. The game makes a turn-based RPG feel like an action game, keeping you engaged in combat at all times, while the highly stylised menus and attacks make it hard to look away. And that’s without even mentioning the music, which is also sensational. And then there’s the narrative behind every action in the game, which could have only come from a studio working unbridled by studio interference; it’s very high-concept, especially as more things are unraveled as the game continues, but it all comes together to deliver one of the most emotional endings of any game in recent memory.
