August for MUBI brings the debut of Ancestral Visions of the Future as a MUBI Global Exclusive, as well as Rosebush Pruning, a streaming exclusive coming to the streaming service.
New films being added this month include The Assistant, Army of Shadows, and a collection focused on Godzilla, with a spotlight on Joanna Hogg.

Solo Sunny

Army of Shadows

Based on Joseph Kessel’s novel, Army of Shadows follows a group of French Resistance fighters during the German occupation.
Filmed with Jean-Pierre Melville’s signature restraint and precision, the film focuses less on the spectacle of war than on the compromises, sacrifices and emotional cost of survival. Lino Ventura and Simone Signoret deliver powerful performances.

Ancestral Visions of the Future

Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese returns with his most ambitious work to date. The Lesotho filmmaker, known for This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection, continues to draw on oral tradition, collective memory and the landscapes of southern Africa.
Ancestral Visions of the Future creates a conversation between the past and future, exploring the enduring power of ancestral knowledge alongside the broken promises of modern life.
Filmed with the poetic intensity that defines Mosese’s work, the film avoids simple answers and instead offers a deeply immersive experience.

The Assistant

Australian director Kitty Green’s The Assistant follows Jane, a recent college graduate and the youngest assistant at a major New York film production company, across a single working day.
Jane arrives before dawn and leaves long after dark, filing paperwork, cleaning offices, booking flights and managing the schedule of a boss who is never seen but whose presence dominates every room.
Julia Garner’s restrained performance captures the strain of working within an environment built on complicity and wilful silence. The film’s climactic visit to human resources arrives without dramatic confrontation, instead exposing the relentless logic of a system designed to protect itself.

Rosebush Pruning

Brazilian-German filmmaker Karim Aïnouz, known for The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão and Motel Destino, delivers one of his most radical works with Rosebush Pruning.
Visceral, formally daring and filled with dark humour, the film continues Aïnouz’s interest in bodies under pressure, desire as a political battleground and the parts of society people would rather ignore.
Standing in the tradition of films that use provocation to reveal deeper truths, Rosebush Pruning presents a distorted reflection of modern life and makes its most unsettling elements impossible to overlook.
