Netflix ANZ has announced ‘The Next Brilliant Career,’ a new initiative designed to help discover Australia’s next generation of screenwriters.

Created in partnership with the Australian Writers’ Guild and all eight Australian state and territory screen agencies, the program celebrates the upcoming release of My Brilliant Career while honouring the legacy of author Miles Franklin.

Netflix ANZ Content Director Amanda Duthie said the initiative draws inspiration from Miles Franklin’s legacy.

“Miles Franklin spent her career fighting for the right to tell her own story on her own terms. The Next Brilliant Career is built on that same conviction. Australia has no shortage of extraordinary women writers; we’ve designed this program to welcome the next generation of bold Australian voices telling stories that resonate here and around the world.”

The initiative is open to emerging Australian writers who identify as women or non-binary, inviting them to submit an original scripted concept for the opportunity to receive direct feedback from Netflix and pitch their project at the company’s Sydney headquarters later this year.

Finalists will travel to Sydney on October 6 to pitch their projects directly to Netflix executives and receive mentoring on developing their ideas for the screen.

To be eligible, applicants must be Australian residents aged 18 or older, identify as a woman or non-binary, not be full-time students, and have between one and three eligible writing credits on commercially released short films, films or television productions supported by recognised festivals or screen agencies.

Applications are open now and close on August 18, 2026.

Australian Writers’ Guild Executive Director Claire Pullen said the program aims to create new opportunities for emerging writers.
