It was reported earlier in the year by several news outlets that Prime Video had been in early discussions about a series based on PlayStation’s God of War game. Today, Deadline is reporting that a full series order has been given, and a hunt for who will play Kratos is about to begin.
Mark Fergus (Children of Men) and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man) will write the series, with Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) serving as showrunner. Cory Barlog, the Studio Creative Director at Santa Monica Studios and the writer/director behind God of War (2018), will serve as an executive producer, and so will Santa Monica Studio head Yumi Yang.
such a great team I get to work with on this. cannot wait for you all to see more, but it will be a while.
until then…never heard of it.

Given the success of God of War’s semi-reboot in 2018, when Santa Monica Studio took a chance by re-working the combat and making the character and story much more interesting by taking him out of Greek mythology and placing him between gods, it won’t be a surprise to see this series pick-up solely from the 2018 game. However, it’ll be a little weird if there are no flashbacks to Kratos’ history in Greece eventually in the show.
The series will be a co-production between Sony Pictures and Amazon Studios in association with the overseeing arm of PlayStation Productions.
