This year’s picks for our Best Supporting Performances in a Comedy Series prove that you don’t need to be at the top of the call sheet to steal the show and have your audience in stitches.
Here are our picks for the Best Supporting Performances in a Comedy Series in 2023.
5. Jon Hamm – Good Omens: Season 2

Jon Hamm does comedy very well, and when Gabriel loses his memory, the once somewhat serious and brooding role becomes a playhouse for him to have fun in. Watching Hamm as Gabriel discovers how gravity works is one of my favourite small but funny moments of the entire year.

4. Tyler James Williams – Abbott Elementary: Season 2

While the ladies of Abbott Elementary led the way in season 1, Tyler James Williams’s Gregory had the most chance to grow as an individual, finally embracing his career as a teacher, and also as a love interest for Quinta Brunson’s Janine. With more eccentricities revealed, friendships with other teachers grown and family revealed over this season, the main reason Williams is on this list is his hilarious looks at the camera. Gets me every time.

3. Brett Goldstein – Ted Lasso: Season 3

Brett Goldstein concluded his run as Roy Kent with another fantastic season as he dealt with the aftermath of his decision to end things with Keeley while continuing to embrace his new life as a coach. Moving on from just delivering his trademark grunts, Roy ended long-running feuds, came to view Jamie as a friend and finally took his rightful place in the Diamond Dogs. While the future for Roy Kent is uncertain, he was a joy to watch while he was here and Brett Goldstein is sure to go on to many great things.

2. Jennifer Coolidge – The White Lotus: Season 2

Jennifer Coolidge was always Stifler’s mum to me. And then came along 2 Broke Girls, and I kinda grew to see more of Coolidge outside of that role, but it wasn’t until The White Lotus, and especially its second season, that Jennifer Coolidge fully separated from her 90s/early 00’s casting in my head. She is utterly fantastic as Tanya McQuid, an unforgettable character who is both ridiculous and annoying, someone you’d hate to meet in real life but the perfect person to follow in a show about a lot of rich assholes. As was the case with the first season, Coolidge led the laughs for the majority of the show, but she also got to explore more of Tanya’s softer side and go out in one of the most fun final character scenes in recent memory.

1. Harrison Ford – Shrinking: Season 1

For a while, Harrison Ford was regarded as a grumpy old man but if his turn in Shrinking is anything to go on, that’s far from the truth. Fully committing to the role Ford is the stand-out in a delightful cast, regularly getting the biggest laughs in scenes with his great delivery choices and timing. But he also plays the role of a man coming to terms with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis while trying to help all those he loves around him. Plus he belted out Sugar Ray’s “Every Morning” which makes him more than deserving of all the love and praise he gets.
