August brings several return series, as well as a couple of new ones to the world of AMC+, Acorn TV and HIDIVE.
Tornado is a new movie that co-stars Tim Roth and Rory McCann, which might be worth keeping your eyes on, while the addition of True Crime Story: Smugshot to AMC+ looks to feature some wild and interesting stories of real-life people who take part in ridiculous criminal behaviour without a thought on the outcomes for them. Anime fans, meanwhile, can look forward to two returning series in Call of the Night and Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho Cour 2.

AUGUST 1
Call of the Night: Season 2 (HIDIVE Exclusive, New Episodes Every Friday)
Summer marks the return of human/vampire love with the highly anticipated second season of Call of the Night, the acclaimed supernatural romance drama set to premiere on July 4 exclusively on HIDIVE. Ko overcomes his confusion about becoming a vampire and decides to “like” Nazuna, while Nazuna resolves to make Ko “fall in love” with her. Without understanding what “love” even is, the two of them spend their nights together in a frenzy. Meanwhile, Detective Uguisu Anko is closing in with her plot to kill vampires, not just Nazuna. A vampire’s weakness is “anything they were attached to when they were human” and so they all try to get rid of this weakness before it’s too late. But, Nazuna has no memory of her human life. What is Nazuna’s hidden past? Why did Anko start killing vampires? And what is the “secret” that Nazuna and Anko share? For Ko, Nazuna, Anko, a fun “late night” doesn’t end here… a new “night” begins! Small Town Security: Series 1-3 (New To AMC+)
The acclaimed AMC series explores a small, family-run security and private investigation company in Ringgold, Georgia called JJK Security. Sometimes hilarious and sometimes poignant, the show captures the day-to-day business of the curiously entertaining and oddly compelling characters that inhabit this world.

Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho Cour 2: Season 2 (HIDIVE Exclusive, New Episodes Every Monday)
The historical fantasy series and spring breakout hit Sword of the Demon Hunter:Kijin Gentosho has returned for the second and final part (Cour 2) of Season 1 with new simulcast episodes every Monday throughout August. In the Edo period, there was a shrine maiden called “Itskihime” in the mountain village of Kadono. Jinta, a wandering orphan who, along with his younger sister Suzune, drifted into the village and grew up to become the shrine maiden’s guardian, ventures into the forest to defeat a mysterious demon who speaks to him of the far future and the threat of a Demon God. So begins this epic supernatural historical fantasy series that follows a demon hunter through his centuryspanning journey from the Edo to Heisei periods—all-the-while questioning his wielding of a sword. Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho is directed by Kazuya Aiura along with writing by Deko Akao, character design by Taro Ikegami and production by Yokohama Animation Laboratory.

True Crime Story: Smugshot (AMC+ Exclusive)
Smugshot is a true crime anthology series that spotlights privileged individuals involved in elaborate criminal behavior. Whether in pursuit of revenge or riches, status or glory, freedom or fame, each of these law-breakers cling to their entitlement in spite of having more to lose than to gain. These are the stories of people who thought they could get away with it. In the premiere episode, “Aussie Abduction,” a romantic picnic quickly turns into a nightmare when a young couple goes missing. Clues point to a satanic cult, but an even more absurd motive is revealed, leaving them naked and wandering the Australian outback with a slim chance of survival.

DI Ray: Series 2 (New To AMC+ & AcornTV)
Series two of DI Ray sees Parminder Nagra’s titular detective thrust into another sensitive and high- profile case. This time, she’ll be investigating the double homicide of Frank Chapman, the notorious head of an organized crime family, and Megan Cutts, an innocent nurse caught in the crossfire. Their deaths will ignite racial tensions across the city, putting DI Rachita Ray in a race against time to unravel the story at the heart of the case before the Chapman family act out their revenge, and an all-out gang war erupts onto the streets.
Nelly Knows Mysteries (AMC+ & AcornTV Premiere)
When advice columnist Nelly finds her childhood friend Dahlia’s boyfriend dead, she joins detective Hogan to help find the killer. However, as suspicions creep in, Dahlia becomes a prime suspect. Starring Pascale Hutton (Sanctuary) and Kavan Smith (Stargate: Atlantis).

Deb’s House: Series 2 (AMC+ Exclusive)
Music mogul Deb Antney is on a quest for the next female R&B superstar. This season, she is backed by an all-star lineup of famed artists who know what it takes to make it to the top. Stepping in to share their wisdom, tough love, and game-changing industry insight are: Waka Flocka Flame, rapper and entrepreneur bringing his no-nonsense industry perspective; LeLee Lyons, founding member of the legendary R&B group SWV and champion of women in music; and Keke Wyatt, the platinum-selling vocal powerhouse known for her raw talent and unforgettable runs. Tornado (AMC+ Premiere)
Set in the rugged landscape of 1790s Britain, Tornado (Kôki) is a young and determined Japanese woman who finds herself caught in a perilous situation when she and her father’s traveling puppet Samurai show crosses paths with a gang of ruthless criminals led by Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his ambitious son Little Sugar (Jack Lowdon). In an attempt to create a new life for herself, Tornado seizes the opportunity to take matters into her own hands and steal the gold from their most recent heist. With her father murdered by the gang and her life in grave danger, Tornado races against time to escape a violent demise and avenge her father’s death.

HIP (Acorn TV Exclusive)
Morgane is 38 years old, has three children, two exes and an IQ of 160; her destiny as a cleaner is turned upside-down when her extraordinary abilities are spotted by the police who offer her a job as a consultant. Starring Audrey Fleurot (Spiral). HIP is the original series that inspired the hit new US version, High Potential starring Kaitlin Olsen (Always Sunny in Philadelphia).
