Codemasters has detailed the upgrade path for Dirt 5 today and although it’s relatively painless for Xbox gamers, there’s a caveat for PlayStation players.

If you buy the game digitally on either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, your next-gen console will automatically upgrade you to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version free of charge.

If you buy the game physically on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you’ll need to insert that disc into your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S and then you’ll be able to download the next-gen version. You’ll need to keep that disc in to keep playing the game.

There is no cut-off date for when you’re able to upgrade to the next-gen version of the game.

However, when asked on Twitter if you’re able to transfer your save data from PS4 to PS5 the official Dirt Twitter account stated this is not possible:

“Currently on Xbox, all progress can be carried over between generations. On PlayStation, your Playgrounds creations can be carried over, but other game progress (career, currency, saved liveries) cannot. If that changes we’ll let you know!”

Playgrounds creations are basically level editor creations you can play and share with other racers online. Presumably, not the thing most players would be looking to transfer between generations.

A level of cross-generational play is enabled. PS4 players can play with PS5 players and Xbox One with Xbox Series X/S. However, there is no cross-play between PlayStation and Xbox players.

Save data not transferring between PS4 and PS5 versions of games is becoming a trend after it was announced that PS4 saves of Marvel’s Spider-Man wouldn’t transfer to the PS5 version of the game.
