'Pokémon Sword & Shield' Goes Big With Dynamax; Huge Wild Areas; 4-Player Raids
The Pokémon Company and Gamefreak tonight revealed a whole bunch of new and exciting details about the upcoming Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield in a Pokémon Direct. Details revealed included new Pokémon, the release date and the legendary Pokémon behind the sword and shield.
One of the first interesting details was 'The Wild Area' which appears to be huge expansive open areas between towns. Bigger than any areas Pokémon games have previously offered players to explore.
These areas also feature Pokémon walking around, somewhat a-la Pokémon Let's Go, although they don't look to be as common. Most of the time a Pokémon was seen passing the player in the video they were the only one around. Compared to the very cluttered assortment seen in Let's Go, this could mean a somewhat more realistic approach where only herds would be seen together. The protagonist was also shown whistling for a Pokémon to appear from grass, shaking a tree in search of one and fishing.
GETTING BIG NOW!
The area's seen in the Pokémon Direct were also a lot more expansive than we'd previously seen. Not only does the huge open 'wild area' look great, but the towns off in the distance look huge as well. Although, we didn't see much from the towns in the direct.
A new mechanic for battles will be introduced in Pokémon Sword & Shield called 'Dynamax.' Dynamaxing your Pokémon makes them into HUGE towering things ready for battle. It seems like a combination of Z-Moves and Mega Evolution’s, except available to all Pokémon and a core-mechanic of Gym battles as they are specifically built for trainers to be able to Dynamax their Pokémon.
You'll only be able to Dynamax your Pokémon once per battle making them and their moves powered up and they'll revert after three turns.
Multiplayer raids were revealed to resolve around strong Dynamaxed Pokémon that four trainers can take on in local co-op, or over Nintendo Online. Some Dynamaxed Pokémon will be exclusive to these raids as well it seems. The best element of this was seeing gigantic volleyballs hurled at the Pokémon to catch them.
