PS4-White-Discontinued.jpg

It seems the Glacier White PS4 console has been discontinued as we head towards the PS5 launch. The console had been available to buy from several online & physical retailers until recently in Australia.

After reading the news that the Xbox One X had been discontinued, as reported by Press Start, I began to wonder if Sony would be cutting any consoles from the PlayStation 4 family.

Xbox said the following when responding to why they have discontinued the Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition:

As we ramp into the future with Xbox Series X, we’re taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. Xbox One S will continue to be manufactured and sold globally. Gamers can check with their local retailers for more details on Xbox One hardware availability.”

Their reasoning makes a lot of sense. Less confusion around what the Xbox Series X is at launch will help sell units. The same could be said for Sonys white PlayStation 4, which is what I began investigating.

What I’ve discovered is that the Glacier White PS4 is showing as ‘discontinued’ on the official Sony website in Australia and all major retails are listing it as ‘out of stock.’

Although you can still find a listing for the Glacier White console at retailers like EB Games, Amazon and more they all list the console as some form of ‘out of stock.’ This includes both the base PS4 500GB console as well as the 1TB Glacier White PS4 Pro.

Speaking to a local JB Hi-Fi employee they confirmed to me that the console is showing as ‘out of stock’ in their system and they have no new ones on the way to their store and you could not purchase one online.

Sonys choice to discontinue the white PS4 consoles makes a lot of sense as the PS5 is a white console, and getting rid of the white PS4 units will surely save a lot of confusion among shoppers this holiday season.

Sony had previously discontinued the base PS4 500GB & 1TB units with the launch of the PS4 Slim consoles.

As we head towards the end of the year, and the launch of the PS5, you’ll now have two simple choices when buying a PS4. The black 500GB slim PS4 or a 1TB PS4 Pro.
