The first trailer for Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling on a trip into space, has been released by Sony Pictures.

Project Hail Mary is based on the book by Andy Weir, the author behind The Martian, which was the basis for the Award-Winning film by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon.

In Project Hail MaryGosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher who is recruited for a mission to send himself into space to help solve the mystery of what is killing the sun and save Earth in the process. However, the story begins with him waking up on the ship, having forgotten who he was and what he was doing.

It seems like the movie will follow a non-linear path as it flashes backward to show how Ryland Grace ended up in such a position to begin with, and tries to remember what he’s meant to be doing.

The film also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub. It’s directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, with a script from Drew Goddard, who previously adapted The Martian.

I was also highly intrigued to see that Greig Fraser is the cinematographer for the film, whose most recent work is both Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, as well as The Creator and The Batman.

Project Hail Mary is set to release in Australian cinemas in March 2026. What did you think of the trailer? Have you read the book on which the film is based? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
