It was a great year for comedy films. I’m happy to report that most of the movies on our list this year have hit cinemas and not just gone straight to streaming services in a world where comedy films in previous years seemed to have been left to very mediocre, and similar films coming to streaming services, this year served up some exciting new films.
Here are our picks for the Best Comedy Films released in 2024.
5.) The Fall Guy

Fresh off stealing the show in Barbie, Ryan Gosling is here playing a stuntman tasked with finding out the whereabouts of the missing leading man of the film. Gosling again is hilarious and his banter with Emily Blunt is delightful while the action scenes have just the right amount of comedy applied to them. A fantastic action-comedy that didn’t get its due in cinemas but hopefully audiences find it in the future.

4.) Babes

Babes is a hilarious and, at times, very poignant look at growing old, motherhood, and friendship. It has two fantastic leads, Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau, who have great chemistry and are able to bounce off one another in a mix of scenes, from gross-out to scenes that come off as ad-libbed in all the best ways.

3.) Anora

Certainly not an obvious comedy at face value, Anora provides plenty to laugh about as the craziness of the situation Ani finds herself in plays out with a bunch of bumbling henchmen trying to find a runaway Vanya so they can get Ani and his shotgun wedding annulled. The situation only gets more amusing as frustration grows and certainly had the audience I saw Anora with laughing throughout.

2.) Hit Man

A college professor pretending to be various hitmen in order to prevent murder-for-hire schemes is a concept with a lot of comedy potential, and Richard Linklater and Glen Powell take full advantage of that potential. I think it is the seriousness in which Powell‘s Gary Johnson takes each of his hitmen personas that really makes this something special. Will hit you right in the funny bone.

1.) Hundreds of Beavers

One of the most inventive comedy films in years, Hundreds of Beavers returns to classic slap-stick comedy in a way that delivers unbridled fresh charm amongst a plethora of paint-by-numbers gags in most big-budget films coming out of Hollywood. In the coming years, as more people discover Hundreds of Beavers, I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes more than just a cult darling and more of a comedy gem for all types of ages.
