According to a report from SIFTER, Australia released 90 games in 2024. This list of only five games is a relatively small highlight of just how much the local industry has grown over the last few years. Although not highlighted on this list, Australian games were released on many platforms in 2024, from VR to all the major consoles and even a Gameboy and Gameboy Advance game. This list highlights just five of the best, but plenty of games are being released in Australia each year, which is well worth checking out.

Here are the Top 5 Australian video games released in 2024.

5.) Diets & Deities

This rhythm cooking game has some banging tunes and will open your eyes to cultural dishes you may not be aware of. The best thing is that the game contains 16 recipes for you to unlock if you want to head into the kitchen after playing. Even if it only takes a couple of hours to see through everything Diets & Deities offers, you’ll want to replay the songs for their unique and original music over and over again.

4.) CONSCRIPT

Set during WW1, CONSCRIPT is an old-school survival horror game that ticks all the boxes of old-school Silent Hill and Resident Evil fans. You’ll die a lot, probably due to lack of or lousy control of your ammunition and weapons. It’s a dark world to spend time in, with the world being vicious and fittingly unrelenting in its look at the world. But you’re also playing as a character searching for his brother, adding a more personal story to this WW1 game. The game, coming from solo developer Jordan Mochi, is also a highlight for Australian release in 2024.

3.) Wild Bastards

As the spiritual successor to Void Bastards, developer Blue Manchu’s follow-up mixes the FPS combat and 2.5D art of Void Bastards with new roguelike elements that have you strategising which characters you’ll send to the planet surfaces and which direction to move along a board-like system with a risk-and-reward structure. Even with a very simple narrative and not much in terms of world-building, it’s an addictive game with a structured gameplay loop that’s easy to keep wanting to play over and over.

2.) The Plucky Squire

One of the most charming games released in 2024 was The Plucky Squire, in which you play as Jot, a hero within a children’s book who gets kicked out into the real-world desk of the child who owns his book. It’s a highly inventive game with unique ideas and a love for children’s books. There’s a sensational sense of wonder here and a passion for simple storytelling that’ll make anyone fall in love.

1.) KILL KNIGHT

KILL KNIGHT is an unrelenting and brutal twin-stick shooter that’ll test even the most hardened of the genre. You must always stay on top of your bullets, beware of your surroundings and enemy attack patterns, attempt to perform counters, and get in with melee attacks to restore ammunition and trigger special attacks at the best possible times. You can quickly lose hours to KILL KNIGHT as you fall into “just one more try” repeats repeatedly, attempting to unlock a new upgrade or simply beat a level.
