Bevan Beats #15
by Ashley Hobley
Welcome to Bevan Beats! This is a fortnightly article and accompanying playlist from us at the Explosion Network. It aims to enable us the ability to share the music we love, discuss a certain theme, or share what we are simply listening to in our everyday lives. You’ll be able to find the playlist on Youtube and on Spotify.
Time for another Bevan Beats playlist from me! Enjoy this eclectic playlist of songs I’ve been listening to lately.
01.) Woman – Mumford & Sons
I really like Mumford & Sons and have been keen to hear their new album, Delta. I wasn’t sold on my first listen, as it’s a bit different to their last album Wilder Mind, but I’m coming around on it. This track is the one that spoke to me the most and that I liked instantly.
02.) The Deepest Sigh, THe Frankest Shadow (MTV Unplugged Live In Melbourne) – Gang Of YOuths
I got into Gang of Youths not long after they performed at the 2018 NRL Grand Final and then their MTV Unplugged live album was released. I really enjoy this stripped back take on their material. “Let Me Down Easy” and “Fear and Trembling” are really great and the performance of “Persevere” is powerful and moving. “[I want to] See light in myself that I see inside everyone else I know” is a lyric I can relate to.
03.) You Remind Me Of Home – Benjamin Gibbard
“Remind Me Of Home” is the first track of Home Volume V, a split album recorded by Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service), and Andrew Kenny (The American Analog Set, The Wooden Birds), the fifth in a series from Post-Parlo Records. This track is short but really good.
04.) One Day – Logic ft. Ryan Tedder
Lot of really enjoyable tracks on Logic’s YSIV but it’s hard not to pick this one, especially after Logic and Ryan Tedder’s performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
05.) The Scientist – Coldplay
I had to include a Coldplay song in this playlist after watching Coldplay: A Head Full of Stars (I talked about it on the latest What Do You Wanna Watch?). “Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it would be this hard” is a lyric that has always stuck with me. It’s crazy to hear that the song came together over a weekend. You can see on of the orignal takes in the documentary. It’s pretty cool.
06.) Depth Over Distance – Ben Howard
I remember first hearing Ben Howard perform a cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe. Checked out a few of his other covers but only recently listened to his original material. This song is about the difficulty of keeping a long distance relationship.
07.) Blood Bank – Bon Iver
Another song from an episode of Chuck! Although, to be fair, I discovered this before hearing it on the show. I was a fan of For Emma, Forever Ago, after hearing “re: stacks” and “Skinny Love”. Funnily enough, I heard a cover of this song by Third Eye Blind recently which was very good but I had to include the original version in this playlist instead.
08.) Remind Me To Forget – Kygo ft. Miguel
So apparently this song came out earlier this year and reached No. 14 on ARIA charts. But I only heard because it featured in the trailer for Five Feet Apart which I watched for a recent Trailer Round Up. I might be slightly out of touch.
09.) Dakota – Stereophonics
I love this song. “You made me feel like the one” is such a great lyric and it has a fun guitar riff.
10.) Ends Of The Earth – Lord Huron
This song featured in the series finale of Community, one of the best sitcoms ever. Enough Said.
11.) Open Season – High Highs
Got back into this track when I rewatched Pitch Perfect while at PAX Austalia. Can you believe Ciaran had never see that movie before?
12.) It’s Christmas So We’ll Stop – Frightened Rabbit
It’s less than a month til Christmas, so I figured I’d include a Chirstmas song. Although, is it really a Christmas song if it is just about putting all the issues and problems in your life and relationship aside to fake being happy for one day? Yeah, that sounds like Christmas to me. Kinda.
