Bevan Beats #2
Welcome to Bevan Beats! This is a fortnightly article and playlist from us at the Explosion Network. It aims to enable us the ability to share the music we love and hear in our everyday lives. You’ll be able to find the playlist on Youtube and on Spotify.
Anyone who has been lucky (or unlucky) to see me in real life will have likely seen me with headphones in, listening to something. I don’t deal with silence well so I’m almost always have some music playing. This playlist is a mixture of songs I really like and stuff I’ve been listening to recently.
1.) LAY IT ON ME – VANCE JOY
I wasn’t a huge Vance Joy fan before this year. I had heard “Riptide” ad nauseam but loved “Georgia“. I didn’t know he had released a new album until someone on Instagram mentioned how good it was. It is good, great even. “Lay It On Me” is one of my favourites and that slow build in the chorus makes me happy every time.
2.) FREAKS AND GEEKS – CHILDISH GAMBINO
Everyone is going crazy for “This is America” but my appreciation for Childish Gambino dates back to the Camp/Culdesac era. I had fallen deeply in love with Community at the time and when I learned that Donald Glover also did music (great music according to his co-stars), I had to give it a try. I was hooked and had a playlist of all his mixtapes on repeat for a good month or so. It’s kinda crazy to see where his gone from getting a start as a writer on 30 Rock to being the multi-talented superstar he is today.
3.) GOOD ARM VS BAD ARMS – FRIGHTENED RABBIT
Last year, I dove deep into Frightened Rabbit’s discography. I had heard some of the songs in different shows and movies over the years but only really listened to them recently. There’s a bunch of different songs I could have included in this playlist but this one was one of the first to really resonate with me. It’s sad that we probably won’t be getting anymore new music from them. RIP Scott Hutchinson.
4.) WHAT IF THIS IS ALL THE LOVE YOU EVER GET? – SNOW PATROL
I’m a big Snow Patrol fan and was excited to see them finally release new music after a 7 year hiatus. Of the 4 singles released, this one is the one I like the most but there a couple other good ones on the album that might feature on a future Bevan Beats. This one reminds of “You Could Be Happy” which is one of my favourites. There is also an alternate version of this song with more of a strings arrangement on the Deluxe Version of Wildness. I’m still undecided on which I like more.
5.) COME ON MESS ME UP – CUB SPORT
I heard a girl on Instagram stories covering this one and had to find the original (side note: Instagram stories is a pretty terrible platform for that). Turns out they’re a local band so here enjoy some good Brissie music!
6.) IN A RESTLESS HOUSE – CITY CALM DOWN
City Calm Down was recommended to me by one of my co-workers and it was a good one. I had this album on repeat for several weeks last year and this track would constantly get stuck in my head.
7.) CRASH INTO ME – DAVE MATTHEW BAND
I have never been a Dave Matthews Band fan, but I really enjoyed this track after listening to it on the Lady Bird soundtrack. Man, how good was Lady Bird?
8.) IT MUST GET LONELY – THE WONDER YEARS
Sister Cities is probably my favourite album this year. I hadn’t heard of The Wonder Years until last year when Spotify recommended “Cigarettes & Saints” to me. That was one of my most listened to songs of last year but I didn’t feel the need to try anymore of their music. But after seeing some good buzz around this one I tried this one and really enjoyed. “Flowers Where Your Face Should Be” or “The Ocean Grew Hands To Hold Me” could easily be on this playlist instead.
9.) HALLELUJAH – PANIC! AT THE DISCO
I went on a big Panic! At the Disco kick a few months ago so I felt compelled to include one of their tracks on this playlist. It’s a funsong that you can’t help but move to.
10.) DO YOU FEEL IT? – CHAOS CHAOS
I first heard this song on an episode of Rick and Morty and it’s been in my playlist rotation ever since.
11.) THROUGH THE VALLEY – SHAWN JAMES
This song should be familiar to everyone who watched The Last of Us Part II reveal trailer from PSX 2016. This is the song that Ellie sings in that trailer. The original is a bit different, and longer than what was used in the trailer. A good listen.
12.) RIVERS AND ROADS – THE HEAD AND THE HEART
Chuck is one of my favourite shows and this was the song it went out on. This song for me is so linked to that ending that when I heard it on an episode of The Good Doctor, I was kinda turned off the episode. This song is one I constantly go back to several years later.
