Gamescom 2022 is in full effect from today and to kick it off Geoff Keighley took to the stage in front of a live crowd, for the first time in what feels like an eternity, for Opening Night Live. It was two hours of game announcements, exclusive world premieres, Red Bull ads, a podcast announcement and even the reveal of a new car. It was a wild event and for those in Australia waking up at 4 AM to watch like I was, definitely too early and too long.
Here’s everything that was announced and shown off during Opening Night Live in order.
It’s called Everywhere and it’s apparently a “whole new world for gamers,” where you can watch, play and hang out. It sounds like the Metaverse, to be honest. It’s releasing in 2023.
A new gameplay clip showed off combat with a few enemies, including a type that’ll grow tentacles and get stronger if you don’t deal with it fast enough.
A trailer showed off some students getting into trouble and discussing illegal spells. It’s releasing on February 23rd, 2023. You can pre-order for 72 hours of early access if that’s something you’d like to do for some reason.
Randy Pitchford took to the stage and announced the game, and said some of the original team from Telltales Games is working on the game. It’s releasing in October this year on all platforms.
A brand new trailer for Sonic Frontiers showed off new enemies, locationsand even Amy captured. Most important though was the release date of November 8th.
A narrative adventure with a focus on the damage we’re doing to the waters, it’s even supporting ocean preservation with Surfrider Foundation Europe. It’s being developed by Parallel Studio and published by Quantic Dream.
Unknown World’s upcoming Moonbreaker is a digital miniatures game where you’ll do battle in tactical, turned-based games. “Hearthstone meets XCOM, kinda” was the pitch given on stage.
But the standout part of this miniatures game was the fact you can paint the miniatures in the game yourself. The game is entering early access on September 29th.
A game being pitched as ‘Pinnochio soulslike’ wouldn’t have been on many bingo lists for Opening Night Live. As weird as all that sounds, the game looked pretty great, like a Bloodborne but with a character having a big metal game. Very soulslike, but with a unique setting and take of the Pinnochio story that is intriguing even in a year with two Pinocchio movies releasing. The game is coming in 2023 and will launch on Xbox Game Pass day one.
From Deck13 comes Atlas Fallen. It looks like an open-world action adventure where you fight creatures that appear from the sand. It’s releasing in 2023.
The Justin Roiland game where all your guns talk to you looks very funny to me, but definitely something that’s going to annoy a lot of people as well, which is totally fine.
In a new trailer for The Expanse: A Telltale Series, the team talked about making the game, exploring space, building upon the TV series and more. The Expanse: A Telltale Series is releasing in 2023.
In what was easily the best trailer for Gotham Knights so far, we see a bunch of different villains, from Hartley Quinn to Clayface and of course, The Court of Owls. Gotham Knights is now releasing on October 21st, and yes it is becoming hard to keep up with all the release date changes for this game.
A new IP that looks pretty great. I’m not sure what the story is exactly but it looks like an action-adventure game, potentially open-world. Being really redundant but it gives major Ghost of Tsushima but in China vibes. Either way, it was a kick-ass trailer.
I was like why is a car being announced at Gamescom, but it’s a partnership with The Pokemon Company. The car has a “Pokemon Mode,” where you can hook up your console, although they never said what it does. The game is all-electric, so Pikachu is the featured partner in the design.
A new trailer was very creepy and it certainly looks like an Outlast game. No release date, but a closed beta is happening in late October, which you can sign up for here.
