The first season of Netflix’s rebooted Lost in Space was pretty solid. The production values were high and the cast were very good. But it seemed to be a show very few people talked about. Now with season 2, hopefully the Robinsons and company will be on more people’s lips and in their watch history.

BoJack Horseman is a show I am incredibly attached to. I couldn’t help but relate to these sad characters who want to be better, even if they rarely do. For 5 seasons, I’ve followed their ups and downs, a lot of their worst moments, and some of their fleeting best.

If you were to put Mad Max, Zombieland and a John Hughes movie into a blender and then sprinkled in some Arthurian legend and Asian warrior themes, you would get Daybreak. That combination could have easily become a bloated mess that collapses under its own weight, but creators Brad Peyton and Aron Eli Coleite have found the portions of each in this series based on Brian Ralph’s comic series.

The idea of clones and cloning is one with a number of ethical conundrums. Many films have explored the idea, from fun comedies like Multiplicity, to romantic dramas like Never Let Me Go. Spider-Man, Super-Man, Star Wars and Jurassic World have all had storylines involving the practice. Hell, even we here at the Explosion Network have discussed the topic before. So it shouldn’t be surprising to see a Netflix series explore the concept, even if it is not very interested in it.

Like the character the film is based on, Joker is a series of contradictions and is sure to raise a number of conflicting feelings and opinions but one thing about this film that can be agreed on: Joaquin Phoenix is astounding.

So, it is interesting that one of the best films of the year explores the morality of a lie and how to cope with sustaining a “good lie”.

Booksmart is a film that we at the Explosion Network had an eye on since its South by Southwest premiere and subsequent trailer was released. The critical acclaim it received after its theatrical release in the US back in May was hard to ignore and made its eventual release in Australia a highly anticipated event. I’m pleased to report that it lives up to the hype and is definitely one of the best films of the year so far.

Last year Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was a runaway success that raked in at the box office and was very successful during award season. With that film’s uncredited director Dexter Fletcher, who took over after Bryan Singer was removed from the project, directing this Elton John biopic it is difficult not to see similarities and compare these two films. The one clear difference between the films is that while Bohemian Rhapsody is a film about musicians, Rocketman is a musical about a musician and that makes a big difference.
