‘Biomutant’ Looks Crazy, Weird And It’s Amazing
by Dylan Blight
Biomutant was announced last year at E3, coming out of left-field featuring a scrappy racoon looking character taking on a monster several times his size in a very cool CG trailer. This year, developer Experiment 101 is showing off the game at Gamescom and it looks like the Arkham series crossed with Ratchet & Clank through an adult filter.
A 20-minute demo is on show at GamesCom this year showing off two areas in the game and although the Explosion Network didn’t attend the show, you can check out the gameplay via IGN.
Biomutant has had style and character since it’s announcement, but in this latest demo, you can see it’s everywhere. The game is adopting a more comic book style as seen when your character — which can be very customizable — bounces around, he or she will have onomatopoeia comic book words flying around. Hit an enemy: pow, slash etc.
The enemies appear to all be based on animal designs similar to the player character, which is reminiscent of Ratchet & Clank. Though one enemy, a gigantic boss can be seen at the end of the demo as the player character makes their way through a toxic wasteland in a mech — yep, you get a mech, it’s fully customizable too — looks like something out of a Studio Ghibli movie.
Biomutant has half a million weapon designs alongside what looks like pre-determined weapons you’ll pick up in missions. You’ll have a lot of variety to how you can take on enemies with either melee combat or ranged. The weapons will apparently be fully customizable as well, right down to the hilt. The melee combat itself looks inspired by the Arkham games as you can see enemies approach and give off a warning symbol when they’re about to hit. Your character also flings themselves over, under and around with lighting fast pace bouncing around like a much faster Batman. The combat is fast and looks fun with the variety of weapons you’ll have available. A combo metre will also build up leading to you being able to pull off ‘super wushu’ an ability that powers up whatever weapon you’re wielding to different effects.
Experiment 101 has said the game will release in Summer of 2019, and I personally can’t wait. Biomutant is a fresh IP with style and oozing with character. An open-world I’m highly intrigued by and want to see more people being excited about.
