If you like wild action movies and big concepts, May looks like a great month, with Furiosa, IF, and Boy Kills World all examples of films in big original worlds. You can also strap in for a new film in the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is hoping to restart and kick off a new trilogy of films.

Here are all the new films coming to Australian cinemas in May 2024. Look for the explosion (💥) for the three things I’m most excited to watch this month. In the comment section below, let me know what you’re looking forward to seeing in cinemas this month.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Play

Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

💥(1): The previous three Apes films were fantastic, and although this is the start of a supposed new trilogy, I’m excited to jump back into this world. Things look to be moving closer to the Planet of the Apes timeline that we all know as we jump ahead many years post-Caesar reign.

Monster (Kaibutsu)

Play

💥(2): I don’t know much about Monster outside of it being a well-crafted film and story that can demand a lot from its viewers. A bunch of people I respect have said it’s fantastic, so I can’t wait to watch it. Sometimes, it’s just word-of-mouth that’s enough to keep me excited.

💥(3): Fury Road is one of the greatest action films of all time. Here’s a prequel, with more on Furiosa and George Miller still directing, with Chris Hemsworth playing what looks like a wild villain new to the franchise. The trailer is also one of the best of the year. How could you not be excited about this?
