Friends and Strangers (2021) [New Movie on MUBI]

James Vaughan’s Tiger Award-winning debut stands out as one of the most uniquely Australian films in recent years. Ray, a freelance videographer, and Alice, who is almost a stranger and a friend of his recent ex, go on an awkward camping trip in the New South Wales bush just weeks before her wedding.

The story is less about a road trip and more about a deadpan look at estrangement, exploring Sydney’s social rituals, the challenge of real connection and the uneasy feeling that comes from a landscape with a history that lingers beneath every casual conversation.

Friends and Strangers is elliptical, dry and carefully controlled, using indirection and omission. The film focuses on what the characters struggle to say to each other and on the footage Ray keeps shooting without knowing exactly why. Vaughan has created a film about Australia that also captures the awkwardness of simply existing anywhere.

Strange Colours (2017) [New Movie on MUBI]

Alena Lodkina’s spare and hypnotic debut follows a young woman who travels to outback Queensland to visit her estranged father. Shot on 16mm in Coober Pedy’s extraordinary lunar landscape, the film moves at the speed of grief. One of the finest Australian films of the decade.

Australian Filmmaker Debuts [New Collection on MUBI]

A collection bringing together debut features from Australian filmmakers across different generations, genres and perspectives. These films offer a glimpse at some of the most distinctive Australian voices at the very start of their filmmaking journeys — from the outback uncanny to the deadpan urban, from suburban horror to quiet feminist poetry.

Between Art and Life: Three by Godard [New Collection on MUBI]

A Curator’s Spotlight on three films by Jean-Luc Godard, streaming alongside Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague. From the explosive invention of Breathless to the political radicalism of his later work, Godard remains the unavoidable centre of gravity of modern cinema.

Mortu Nega (1988) [New Movie on MUBI]

Flora Gomes’s landmark debut — whose title translates as Those Whom Death Refused — is one of the cornerstones of African cinema. Few filmmakers shaped the identity of East German cinema as profoundly as Konrad Wolf. Bouchra [MUBI Exclusive Movie]

Meriem Bennani is a leading artist who blends video, documentary and internet culture. Her work draws on social media styles, personal stories and sharp cultural insights, earning her close attention in the art world. With Bouchra, her first feature film co-directed with Orian Barki, she brings this approach to long-form fiction.

PULP: What Do You Do For An Encore? [New Documentary on MUBI]

PULP: What Do You Do For An Encore? is a celebration of one of Britain’s most unusual bands, captured during their triumphant 2025 tour. Directed by longtime collaborator Garth Jennings and narrated by PULP frontman Jarvis Cocker, the film weaves together footage from their live show with four decades of never-before-seen archival material, charting the band’s circuitous journey from Sheffield outsiders to unlikely cultural icons.

Featuring twenty songs spanning the course of their career, PULP: What Do You Do For An Encore? is a tribute to a band of misfits whose sharp social commentary, sarcastic yet sincere wit and enduring empathy with their audience continues to resonate across generations.

Belle de Jour (1967) [New Movie on MUBI]

Luis Buñuel’s darkly comic and strangely tender masterpiece stars Catherine Deneuve as a housewife who spends her afternoons working in a Parisian brothel. Witty, mysterious and utterly at ease with the irrational, it remains one of the most elegant films ever made about desire and its discontents.

1970s Erotica [New Collection on MUBI]

Drawing on the idea of “porno chic,” this collection highlights films that redefined the possibilities of erotic cinema in the 1970s, moving beyond the confines of adult entertainment to enter the cultural mainstream.
