The Order 1886 — anniversary header

It’s been five years since Ready At Dawn’s PlayStation 4 exclusive released into the wild. The Order 1886 was polarising, but five years on, what’s stood the test of time are the fans who still really want that sequel. I’m one of them.

Here are five awesome things about The Order 1886 to celebrate its anniversary.

1) It’s Beautiful

One thing that’s undeniable about The Order 1886 is its stunning detail and beautifully created world. From the character designs and the next-gen animation to the highly detailed environments (down to the tiniest engravings on your weapons), it’s an obvious labour of love from Ready At Dawn—and that sublime detail shows it.

2) Best Moustache

Speaking of detail: this game is the long-standing winner of “best video-game moustache.” Look, Captain Price in the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is pushing for the title, but Sir Galahad/Grayson still has it with a simple ’stache that’ll make anyone swoon.

3) The World

Smash Victorian-era semi-steampunk vibes and a bunch of King Arthur fantasy stuff—with monsters—and you have The Order 1886. It’s a wild mix that only escalates as the game continues, and by the time the credits roll you just want anything set in this universe to keep expanding the lore. It all comes together thanks to highly realised characters and that aforementioned attention to detail.

4) Cinematic

Although the cinematic aspect ratio (aka black bars) was something people either loved or hated, it’s hard to deny how cinematic the game is even without that film-like choice. The game is rather short (another common complaint), but that yields a tight story with interesting characters in every scene, shocking discoveries, twists and turns, and action that moves fast and never bogs you down. The original score by Jason Graves ties it all together and adds that extra layer of cinematic quality.

5) He’s Batman Now

I’ve dodged major spoilers so far for anyone yet to play The Order 1886, but I’ve got to shout out the ending because it’s still one of my favourite PS4 closing scenes—and it really makes me want a sequel.

Our man Galahad/Grayson is basically Batman at the end of the game and I love it. He perches over a city on lockdown and closes with: “I’m no longer Galahad.” Yep—it’s because you’re basically the Dark Knight of London now, hunting vampires, Lycans and whatever else the sequel could throw at you. Big-ass Bloodborne-like monsters, hopefully.

Here’s hoping we get a sequel to The Order 1886. If Grayson pops up at a PS5 showcase, I’m doing a cartwheel.
