Halo: Campaign Evolved marks the iconic first-person shooter series’ long-awaited debut on PlayStation, while also giving Xbox and PC players a chance to replay the series that turned the Xbox brand into a household name. This remake rebuilds the original campaign in Unreal Engine 5 while introducing new story content and modernised gameplay.
Australian critics have praised the remake’s visual overhaul, faithful recreation of Bungie’s classic campaign and thoughtful additions, though several reviewers noted the absence of traditional multiplayer as its biggest drawback.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is being released in Australia on July 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

KOALATY CRITICS – AUSTRALIAN CRITICS
MKAU Gaming – 10/10 (Hayden Nelson)
“The expanded sandbox adds a whole new layer to the experience all around. For the first time, iconic weapons from across the Halo franchise can be used throughout the campaign, including my personal favourite, the Energy Sword, which you were unable to use in the original.”

The Beta Network – 10/10 (Anthony Culinas)
“Unreal Engine 5 gives the game a huge visual boost, the updated cutscenes and audio are excellent, and the performance on PS5 is smoother than Johnson’s one-liners. The only real casualty is the lack of competitive multiplayer. A massive disappointment.”

NextPlay – 9/10 (Roberto Moran)
“The campaign itself remains relatively short, but Halo has always been built around replayability. Whether you’re playing solo or jumping into co-op with a friend, it never loses that addictive quality. In fact, it has such a strong co-op focus, and it’s still the best way to experience the campaign when you’re battling your way with friends.”

PowerUp Gaming – 9/10 (Adam Mathew)
“The aged skeleton of Halo hasn’t lost many minerals or calcium after 25 years. Firefights within this two-gun system (and often against multiple factions) are still surprising and the robust AI (for its time) can still wrongfoot you in wonderful ways.”

Press Start – 9/10 (Brodie Gibbons)
“Despite missing its iconic multiplayer component, enormous replay value, welcome modernisations to both gameplay and visuals, fixes for decades-old pacing issues, and a three-piece prologue make Campaign Evolved an exceptional way to experience Halo’s legendary single-player campaign, which remains a sci-fi blockbuster to this day.”

Ani-Game – 8.5/10 (Joel Gralton)
“The story may not have completely lived up to the legendary status it had built in my mind, but the satisfying combat, excellent weapon variety, enjoyable vehicle sections and impressive visual overhaul still make for a fun campaign. Most importantly, it’s great to see Halo finally arriving on PlayStation, opening the door for an entirely new audience to experience one of Microsoft’s defining series.”

Checkpoint Gaming – 8.5/10 (Omi Koulas)
“Halo: Campaign Evolved is a bold remake that succeeds more often than it stumbles. The new Operation: Meteorite missions and stunning Unreal Engine 5 presentation make this far more than a straightforward remake, even if modern gameplay tweaks alter the pacing and feel.”

Maxi-Geek – 8.5/10 (Luke Henderson)
“Revisiting Halo via Campaign Evolved should have resulted in nothing but a good time, but by the time the credits rolled, I just felt like I had completed something from a checklist. There is nothing functionally wrong, though those engine and controller issues need to be fixed, but outside of the visual upgrade, there is nothing here that makes me think this was needed.”

Player 2 – B+ (Matt Hewson, Paul James)
“I am sure there will be people out there, die-hard fans, who will find things that they don’t like, and not having multiplayer outside of co-op is a bit of a bummer, but I am more than happy to say that this is a well-considered, respectful remake of not only a classic, but an important part of videogame history.”

Stevivor – 8/10 (Jay Ball)
“The best thing about Halo Campaign Evolved is that it’s for almost everyone simply because the source material is so good and it holds such cultural significance. For younger gamers who might have struggled to see past the dated visuals of the previous versions, this may be just what they need to truly understand why the Halo series is so revered.”
