“We’re not in a position to be turning down meetings with Disney!” says Atsushi Inaba when asked if PlatinumGames would take the call about working on a Star Wars game. No, PlatinumGames haven’t received such a call just yet. But what a concept to consider.
LucasFilm has recently opened up the Star Wars license and it seems like we’ll be getting many different studios working on Star Wars games in the years to come. Recently it was revealed that Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, the developer of The Divison series is working on some sort of Star Wars game.
In an interview with VGC, Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba, the two were asked about the Star Wars property and if they’d be interested in working on a Star Wars game. Between some quips about the sequel trilogy (it seems Kamiya loves the sequel trilogy, Inaba not so much) they spoke about a love for the property and what type of Star Wars game they’d make. Kamiya said Star Wars is a “very well devised world” and noted how much depth and character there is inside that universe.
“For PlatinumGames we could think, ‘we have a lightsaber, we slice at some guy and he goes flying, we do a mid-air combo and then pull out a whip lightsaber and start getting at ‘em’, but what if the powers that be say, ‘you can’t do that with Star Wars’?”
Inaba followed up by saying how much of a dream it’d be to work on a Star Wars game, but also echoed the same trepidation as Kamiya.
“Star Wars has such a fully developed world I feel it might be hard for us to add something. I think fans would be angry at what we would do, so it’s a difficult proposition.”
Personally, I think a PlatinumGames developed Star Wars game would be amazing. They might need to strike a good working relationship with the LucasFilm story group to stay within the margins, but gameplay-wise, I’m sure they’d have more freedom than they think.
