A Rambo prequel titled ‘John Rambo‘ is currently being shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival. Sylvester Stallone isn’t involved in the project at the moment, and someone else would have to be cast as the younger John Rambo in a film set in the 1970s.

In an exclusive report, Deadline has shared that Jalmari Helander, the director who has worked on Sisu and Rare Exports, is currently set to direct. The screenplay comes from Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, who worked on the Black Adam movie for DC. The two also co-wrote The Mauritanian with Michael Bronner.

The first Rambo film was First Blood, based on David Morrell’s book of the same name. It told the story of a homeless Vietnam veteran who is captured and driven to his limits by the local town and its police, who then go to war against him when he escapes from prison. A prequel film would presumably be set in the Vietnam War or possibly show Rambo’s life in the lead-up to the war itself in his younger years.
