Australian distributor Umbrella has announced that Mockbuster will release in Australian cinemas on August 27, with director Anthony Frith embarking on a national Q&A tour to celebrate the film’s release.

Part documentary and part experiment, Mockbuster follows Frith as he lands an unexpected directing job with The Asylum, the studio best known for producing films such as Sharknado and its catalogue of low-budget “mockbusters.”

After pitching himself to the studio, Frith is set to direct a reboot of The Land That Time Forgot under the kind of conditions The Asylum has become famous for.

Check out the trailer for Mockbuster below.

“Mockbuster is exactly the kind of film Umbrella loves bringing to Australian and New Zealand audiences: heart on your sleeve, hilarious and made by people who clearly love cinema in all its forms […] Mockbuster was born from a love for B-movies, desperation and sheer stupidity. I can’t wait for the Australian public to finally be privy to the inner workings of one of the world’s most resilient film studios.”

Here are the locations and dates for the Mockbuster Q&A tour:

Adelaide

  • August 27 – Palace Nova Eastend

Melbourne

  • August 28 – Cinema Nova
  • August 29 – Lido Cinemas

Sydney

  • August 30 – Dendy Newtown
  • August 31 – The Ritz Randwick

Mockbuster releases in Australian cinemas on August 27, 2026.
