The fifth entry in the franchise is currently slated to release on January 14th, 2022 and will see Ghostface returning to haunt Sidney and co once again in the fictional town of Woodsboro.

Campbell has played Sidney Prescott in all four Scream films that were directed by Wes Craven. The last film, Scream 4 was released in 2011.

It had previously been confirmed that David Arquette and Courteney Cox would also be reprising their roles as Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers in the fifth film.

The fifth entry in the franchise is being produced by Radio Silence as a soft-relaunch. The production company behind the recent Ready or Not and the original V/H/S has placed Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett in the directors’ chairs with a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, who’s previous work includes Ready or Not, Slender Man and Zodiac.

A statement from Campbell was posted by Variety in which she spoke positively about returning to the franchise.

“After spending time speaking with Radio Silence, they have shown such love, respect and admiration for Wes Craven and all that he’s created in the ‘Scream’ franchise. I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro.”

Scream 4 was met with mixed critical reception when it released in 2011, although I personally think it’s the best film in the franchise next to the original, of course.
