April will begin with the massive release that is sure to be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it’s coming in perfect time with the school holidays, so I’ll be interested to see just how well it does at the box office. For those looking for something a bit more serious, A24 will have The Drama early in April, so we can finally find out just what Zendaya says to cause all the drama.
Also in April are four one-word films that all look interesting to me for different reasons: Normal, Michael, Hokum and Beast. And sure, another big release of the year is The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Here are all the new films coming to Australian cinemas in April 2026.

The President’s Cake
It’s “draw day“ across Iraq, when schools select students for the honour of bringing items to their mandatory local celebrations of President Saddam Hussein’s birthday. Nine-year-old Lamia lives in the historic marshes with her spirited grandmother, Bibi. Before school, Bibi teaches Lamia clever tricks to avoid being chosen for the president’s cake. However, when Musa, the authoritative teacher, calls Lamia’s name for the most challenging task—the birthday cake—she has no choice but to accept. Refusing could mean imprisonment or even death.

Grieving the loss of his father and unable to relate to the people in his life, 10-year-old Tom takes refuge in the everyday objects around him; they reveal their true identities and speak to Tom, helping him in his healing process.
Jean Valjean
Adaptation of the first 100 pages of Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables”, where Jean Valjean encounters goodness for the first time.
The Deb
An original comedy musical about two teenage girls attending a debutante ball in a small rural town.

Hokum
A horror writer visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, unaware the property is said to be haunted by a witch.
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley
