After July was chock-full of comic book films, August is taking a break and moving into a month of horror and horror-adjacent films, as well as some sequels, one to a recent favourite and another to a childhood classic.

The month is kicking off with Freakier Friday, a follow-up to the 2003 film Freaky Friday, which was in itself the fifth adaptation of the book by Mary Rodgers, which is the basis for all of the films. This should draw in anyone who was a kid when the early 2000s film was released, with both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan returning for their roles. A more recent sequel, which is sure to be a hit at the box office, is Nobody 2 with Bob Odenkirk returning as Hutch, a former government assassin now attempting to be somewhat retired.

In the genre space in August, there is an assortment of interesting new films. Weapons is the latest film written and directed by Zach Cregger, the director behind 2022’s fantastic horror film Barbarian. This one looks as unique and with as much potential mystery and twists as that past film has featured. Horror-adjacent this month, The Life of Chuck is the new Mike Flanagan film based on the Stephen King story of the same name. Although this story doesn’t fall into King’s horror space, and is more in line with his stories like The Green Mile, by all reports, it’s still as unique and odd, making for an interesting film. And Ari Aster’s new film, Eddington, which isn’t a horror film, but is set to be very violent from the director of Hereditary, is set in the small town of Eddington during 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when a war of words and violence breaks out between the Mayor and the Sheriff.

Here are all the new films coming to Australian cinemas in August 2025.
