Pokémon GO is turning 10, if you can believe that, and developer Niantic is celebrating with a special in-game event packed with bonuses and new things.

The Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Party will run from July 4 at 10 AM until July 6 at 8 PM local time, with some bonuses extending through to the end of July.

The headline for this event is Gimmighoul, holding a 10th-anniversary coin, which can be encountered via Golden Lure Modules and Coin Bags. For the first time, players will also have a chance to encounter a Shiny Gimmighoul while using a Coin Bag, and lucky Trainers may find one with a Special Background.

Throughout the event, trainers will earn four times the usual XP and Stardust for catching Pokémon, while event-themed Pokémon appearing in the wild will have increased Shiny rates.

Several fan-favourite costumed Pokémon will also return, including:

  • Pikachu wearing a cake hat
  • Eevee wearing a party hat
  • Wurmple wearing a party hat

There may be shiny versions of these to catch as well.

Players will also be able to evolve certain Pokémon to receive their classic Community Day-exclusive attacks:

  • Venusaur – Frenzy Plant
  • Charizard – Blast Burn
  • Blastoise – Hydro Cannon

A new Paid Timed Research will also be available for US$1.99 (or regional equivalent), rewarding trainers with:

  • One Super Incubator
  • One Premium Battle Pass
  • An encounter with Gimmighoul holding a 10th anniversary coin with a Special Background
  • Additional event rewards

Event-themed Field Research tasks, stickers and a new avatar item will also be available throughout the celebration.

The debut of Gimmighoul holding a 10th anniversary coin and the chance to find a Shiny Gimmighoul will continue until July 31, giving trainers a little extra time to hunt down the anniversary-exclusive Pokémon.
