In what is the weirdest decision for any disc drive setup ever, the new PlayStation 5 console with the detachable disc drive will require an internet connection to set up. You can only laugh at this stuff.
X user @charlieINTEL shared images of the upcoming Modern Warfare III PS5 bundle, but eagle-eyed users quickly spotted that on the PS5 box, it says, “internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Yes, it appears that Sony has somehow managed to add DRM to a disc drive.

Back says “150GB minimum.” Also says 90GB+ download required to play.

Obviously, this is very weird, and whatever Sony’s worries may be, even if they’re about people being able to pair the console with non-Sony disc drives, it’s simply not worth risking a completely useless and obsolete drive that adding to the list of things that are making games preservation and physical media more and more of a rarity.
But what do you think? Is pairing your PS5 with its disc drive requiring an internet connection okay? Am I simply just getting too old? Let me know in the comment section below.
