Here are the Australian box office results for the week of 22/07 – 28/07.

In the top position, Space Jam: A New Legacy has hung onto the hoop and approaching the 10M mark after taking in 903k over the last week. The film had a massive weekend at the cinema, even with lockdowns in effect in several parts of the country. Victorian and South Australian cinemas were opened from Wednesday the 28th (only allowing one day for this week’s numbers), while Sydney cinemas will remain closed for at least another month.

Not far behind Space Jam is Black Widow, which took in 894k last week bringing the cumulative total to $11.69m and showing that Marvel’s return to the big screen is still much desired by cinema-goers. The film is also in its fourth week, so it’ll be interesting to see next week’s numbers and if there’s any drop-off.

In third and fourth place were two new films. M. Night Shamalan’s new horror film, Old, which took in a solid $587, and in fourth was Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins, the semi-reboot of the franchise which took in $394 in its opening weekend.

Other notable things in the top ten from this week was Fast & Furious continuing to spin-rubber and pull in $195k, and Spirited Away’s 20th anniversary in cinemas drawing in $70k despite the very limited cinemas it was shown inside of.
