The Last Exterminator | PAX Australia 2026 Preview
The Last Exterminator pairs retro shooter visuals with fast movement and weighty weapons. Blast alien cockroaches with shotguns, bait charging enemies into mines, and use the environment to your advantage.
The Last Exterminator is a nineties-era shooter-inspired game, with visuals that feel directly pulled from that inspiration; however, the movement and shooting feel modern and fast. In The Last Exterminator, you are the last exterminator dealing with one hell of a cockroach invasion. I enjoyed playing and talking with the developers at PAX Aus 2026.
The weapons felt solid and heavy, with the shotgun being a particular highlight. Blasting the bugs up close and personal and hearing the weapon blast felt amazing. The mines were also a great choice when baiting some of the charging enemies.
That is also where this game takes a slightly different path; the game rewards tactical thinking. Using the environment to slow, hide or bait enemies makes for steady progress over just running and gunning.
Visually, the game looks as if it was pulled from the early nineties, and you can see how games such as Doom, Wolfenstein or Duke Nukem have made an impact on these visuals. Even the animations on the enemies and the weapons feel like they are from that era.
The demo had two choices: a basic stage and a tower level. Each had a unique design and way to tackle the level, working my way through the stage, I was pushed towards the goal slowly. With buildings falling and blocking paths and using side routes and key cards to access the areas I needed to. Whereas the tower saw me climbing up a winding tower. Occasionally having to jump or move from one tower to the next to continue my progress.
The short time I had with the game left a lasting impression, to the point that I downloaded the demo once I arrived home to play it some more. If the demo is much to go on, I have high hopes for the final product as I found it to be one of my favourite games I played while at PAX.
The Last Exterminator is available to Wishlist on Steam, with a release date yet to be announced.
