These are the games that we were spending 2022 either playing in the same room with or online with friends. From the best ways to start a fight with one another as someone lets the team down to the competitive one-on-one.

Here are our picks for the Top 5 Best Multiplayer Games in 2022.

5.) Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment

2016 Overwatch was Game of the Year for many, unseating beloved single-player experiences and showing its potential for the growth of the Franchise. It’s 2022, and some may believe that potential had gone to waste through years of little support and dwelling player numbers. Overwatch 2 did not return the franchise to that pedestal, but it showed plenty of potential remaining in the now free-to-play franchise. Returning with 5v5 in the new games for service structure has yet to be smooth sailing. But the team at Blizzard are working to improve that, with players flocking to the game more than even its initial release in 2016. With an ever-growing cast of characters, PVE on the horizon and endless matches of PVP, there is plenty of hope for Overwatch 2 to not only live up to the early expectations of the original but also surpass them until we are asking ourselves, “ever get that feeling of Deja Vu?”

4.) MultiVersus

Player First Games, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment

How do you create a platform fighter that differentiates itself from the king of the genre, Super Smash Bros.? You make it 2 v 2, which is exactly what the team behind Multiversus did. With characters having abilities that aid their teammate, there is an extra level of strategy to each match which makes playing with a friend more rewarding. Add on top of that characters from some of the world’s biggest franchises and make it free-to-play, and you have one of the best multiplayer games of the year.

2.) Fortnite

Epic Games

You don’t need to be good at Fortnite to enjoy it, and thanks to the addition of a permanent ‘no build mode,’ Fortnite has become more accessible for friends to play together. And thanks to the continued and wild array of characters being added to the game, there’s got to be something for everyone in Fornite by now; if not, there will be soon enough. It’s the ultimate sandbox for friends to waste a few hours on while discussing their week.

1.) Apex Legends

Respawn Entertainment, EA Games

Apex Legends continues to be our battle royal of choice. 2022 saw PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game, meaning it has never run or looked better than now. Add on top of that four season worth of content, events and 4 new characters, and the team at Respawn have given players plenty of reasons to team up to try to be champions.
