There may be debate as to whether we are still in the golden age of television but based on the quality of the new shows on this list as well as those that didn’t quite make it, you can be sure that we still are.
Here are our picks for the Best New Series of 2023.
5. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could have easily just been a faithful adaptation of the comics in an animated form and there would have been plenty of happy fans to eat that up. Instead original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and showrunner BenDavid Grabinski chose to make radical changes to the direction of the show, addressing some of the issues fans have started to develop with the movie and source material as the world has changed. This new direction allowed to get a different look at many of the side characters and exes but still has the same charm, action and heart that Scott Pilgrim has always had.

4. Mrs. Davis

Looking back at the year, we didn’t know that the odd series Mrs. Davis, which is all about an AI running and ruining the world, would be so topical for the industry. What’s even funnier is that the episode titles in this show are nonsense that AI came up with, not attempts to be intelligent hints at what’s to come in the next hour. The whole cast is excellent in Mrs. Davis, but major props to the creators and producers for getting this series made. Just eight episodes of the weirdest, riveting and funniest television I have watched all year.

3. Shrinking

The fact that Harrison Ford agreed to work on this show despite not having a script is proof of the faith he had in the show’s creators and his faith was rewarded in spades. Shrinking is a fantastic comedy with a fantastically well-rounded ensemble cast who all have amazing chemistry with each other while often dealing with tough subjects like grief, PTSD and Parkinson’s disease. One of the funniest and yet sincere shows you could watch this year.
2. Poker Face

Take the director of the incredible modern whodunnit Knives Out films and make Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne the star. How could you not fall in love with whatever the end result was? Poker Face is a fantastic mystery of the week show that sees Lyonne’s Charlie constantly finding herself in the proximity of a murder and we watch as she slowly pieces everything together with the ability to tell when people are lying. While there are certainly some serialized elements, it was nice to just sit down and a great procedural episode of television each week.

1. Silo

I saw someone tweet something about how Apple produces some of the best shows but just fails to market them well, which is very true. And in the case of Silo, one of the best new shows of the year, it is criminal more people (at least in my bubble) weren’t talking about it. Week to week, this would have been a fantastic water-cooler conversation with a story revolving around a post-apocalyptic future where humans live in a Silo and send those who are deemed criminals outside to clean the camera that lets them see the destruction outside. Add some fantastic actors like Rebecca Ferguson in the lead, and you need to catch up on this before the show returns for a new season.
