After playing in front of Avatar: The Way of Water at Imax screenings, the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s next film, Oppenheimer, has now been released online.

The film is set to cover the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, who was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project. A major focus will be his contributions to the creation of the atomic bomb.

While it is widely known that the film features one of the most star-studded ensemble casts, with actors like Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh and Kenneth Branagh set to appear, this first trailer is primarily focused on Murphy’s Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer talks about what will be the atomic bomb and how for humanity to fear its power, it must first use it. This played over footage of people working on the atomic bomb project, imagery of particles, Jack Quaid looking worried and some bomb testing, which isn’t surprising given reports that he recreated the first nuclear weapon detonation without CGI effects.

Interestingly, it has been noted that the trailer is slightly different to the one shown on IMAX screenings. Another reason to see Avatar: The Way of Water again?

Oppenheimer is set to release in Australian cinemas on the 20th of July 2023 and is set to be Christopher Nolan’s first film with Universal after ending his long working relationship with Warner Bros.
