One of the biggest independent film distributors in Australia and a go-to for exciting new Blu-ray releases every month, Umbrella has announced that it is opening a new arm of its enterprise with Umbrella Gaming. This new distribution division of Umbrella will be dedicated to supporting and releasing independent video games across Australasia. The team has also shared the first game they have acquired for Umbrella Gaming, being Pro Jank Footy.
Umbrella has already set the path for their step into gaming recently. They’ve acquired Exit 8, which is based on the viral video game sensation that garnered huge attention across social media. The film is debuting in Australia at MIFF and releasing in cinemas on August 16. Umbrella has also recently acquired Return to Silent Hill ahead of the film’s debut. Of course, this film is based on the hugely popular series of Silent Hill games from Konami, and the new film seee it being co-written and directed by Christophe Gans, who directed the original Silent Hill film.
Umbrella’s General Manager, Ari Harrison, said:
“We’re stoked to launch Umbrella Gaming as a new home for bold, original games from Australia and New Zealand’s most creative minds. Just as Umbrella has championed independent film, we’re now bringing that same passion and experience to the world of indie games – backing distinctive voices, supporting end-to-end releases, and helping local stories reach global audiences.”
Umbrella Gaming’s first game, Pro Jank Footy, comes from David Ashby (Danger 5) and Tyler Roach (formerly of the team at Mighty Kingdom), as Powerbomb Games, and features the voice talent of Aunty Donna’s Broden Kelly performing the commentary for this chaotic, and absurdist AFL game.
Powerbomb Games Director, David Ashby, said:
“When we set out to make Pro Jank Footy, we decided on two things. One, make a fun and chaotic retro throwback of Australian Rules Football. And two, keep the production an Australian story. Umbrella recognises the plethora of talent we have in this country, as we are one of many developers making weird and wonderful games that truly have appeal at home and abroad. We’re humbled to be their first.”
Pro Jank Footy will be making appearances at both PAX AUS 2025 in Melbourne and SXSW in Sydney this October.
