June is looking a little light on big movies to get butts in seats at cinemas. But based on recent numbers, not even Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga could do that… Anyway, as sad as that is, anyone reading this must be interested in hitting their local cinemas up, so I applaud you.
Here are all the new films coming to Australian cinemas in June 2024. Look for the explosion [💥] for the three things I’m most excited to watch this month. In the comment section below, let me know what you’re looking forward to seeing in cinemas this month.
JUNE 6
Bad Boys: Ride or Die
This Summer, the world’s favorite Bad Boys are back with their iconic mix of edge-of-your seat action and outrageous comedy but this time with a twist: Miami’s finest are now on the run.
[💥: Bad Boys For Life was a surprise hit for me. I went into it not expecting much but found it to hit the buddy-cop itch that we don’t really have much of on the big screen anymore. And with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah returning for this follow-up, I’m hoping they will be able to follow it up successfully in Bad Boys: Ride or Die.]
The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady
D’Artagnan is forced to join forces with Milady to save Constance, who was kidnapped before his eyes. But as war is declared and Athos, Porthos and Aramis have already joined the front, a secret from the past shatters old alliances.
The Watchers
A young artist gets stranded in an extensive, immaculate forest in western Ireland, where, after finding shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers, stalked by mysterious creatures each night.
[💥: There’s gotta be some pressure for director Ishana Shyamalan, not only making her first feature film in The Watchers but also, unfortunately, bound to be compared to the work of her father, M. Night Shyamalan. Unlike most of his work, however, the film is based on a popular horror novel of the same name by A.M. Shine. The trailer looks very creepy, and the often under-utilised Dakota Fanning leads a great cast here.
JUNE 13
Inside Out 2
In this sequel to Pixar’s Oscar-winning 2015 film, Riley encounters new emotions in her teenage years.
La Syndicaliste (The Sitting Duck)
French thriller based on the true story of Maureen Kearney (Isabelle Huppert), the head union representative of a French multinational nuclear powerhouse who became a whistleblower.
The Exorcism
Russell Crowe leads this meta exorcism horror about a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a horror film. His estranged daughter wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.
JUNE 20
Despicable Me 4
Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes welcome a new member to the family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to go on the run.
Divertimento
Classical symphonic music is everything for 17-year-old Zahia Ziouani and her twin sister, Fettouma. Nevertheless, living in underprivileged Parisian suburbs in 1995 with their Algerian background, they struggle arduously to approach their dreams – becoming an orchestra conductor and a cellist. Driven by determination, passion, and courage, they create their own orchestra, Divertimento.
The Convert
A lay preacher arrives at a British settlement in 1830s. His violent past is soon drawn into question and his faith put to the test, as he finds himself caught in the middle of a bloody war between Maori tribes.
The Promised Land
The story of Ludvig Kahlen who pursued his lifelong dream: To make the heath bring him wealth and honor.
JUNE 21
The Emu War
Based on the infamous Great Emu War of 1932, a rag tag platoon of soldiers are driven into a brutal and bloody battle against Australia’s deadliest flightless beasts.
[💥 The fact that a film titled The Emu War has any basis, in reality, is shocking, but this film will look to tell the story of how we went to ‘war’ with Emus in an attempt to save crops in the early thirties. How much of this film will be based on reality? Probably very little. But there’s Emu’s wearing tin hats and holding guns. All in all, The Emu War looks like something so stupid I can’t miss it.]
JUNE 27
A Quiet Place: Day One
Experience the day the world went quiet.
Blue Lock: The Movie – Episode Nagi
Seishiro Nagi, a lazy high school sophomore whose catchphrase is “annoying,” is discovered to have a talent for soccer by his classmate Reo Mikage, who dreams of winning the World Cup, and is invited to start playing soccer. After demonstrating his overwhelming soccer talent, Seishiro receives an invitation to the Blue Lock Project. There, he meets strikers from all over the country, including Kiyoyoichi, Hachiraku Mawaru, and Itoshi Rin
The Mountain (2024)
Explores the journey of three young people as they seek solace under the watchful gaze of the Taranaki mountain and companionship in the spirit of adventure.
