Umbrella has released the first trailer for the upcoming Australian animated comedy Lesbian Space Princes, ahead of its release in cinemas in September, and showcasing at the Melbourne International and New Zealand International film festivals in August.

Introverted space princess Saira is devastated when she is unexpectedly dumped by her girlfriend Kiki for being needy. Deep in the depths of despair, Saira is thrown a lifeline when Kiki abruptly calls for help. Kiki has been kidnapped by forgotten incels known as the Straight White Maliens. Problem is, they’re holding her ransom for the one thing Saira doesn’t have: one of the most powerful weapons known to lesbian kind – her royal Labrys! 24 hours on the clock, Saira sets out to save her ex in the hopes of winning her back. Along the way she will face the fears of the unknown and the scariest thing of all: her own self doubt.

Lesbian Space Princess has won praise at several film festivals over the past year, including at the Berlin, Karlovy Vary, Frameline and SXSW London Film Festivals. The film was most honoured when it took home theTeddy Awardat the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film comes from the duo of first-time filmmakers Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese as an independent film, thanks to the South Australian Film Corporation Film Lab: New Voices Program, with additional funding from Adelaide Film Festival and Screen Australia. Lesbian Space Princess is produced by Tom Philips of We Made a Thing Studios.

The cast for Lesbian Space Princess includes Shabana Azeez (The Pitt, Birdeater), Bernie Van Tiel (Class of 07), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High, Ladies in Black), Richard Roxburgh (Prosper, Rake), Kween Kong (RuPaul’s Drag Race Australia), Madeleine Sami (Deadloch, The Breaker Upperers) and Aunty Donna (Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe).
