We do not write about sports such as Tennis on Explosion Network, but when the Australian Open crosses over with a gaming sporting event, I become a sports writer.

The AO Summer Smash featuring Fortnite returns in 2023 with USD $100,000 up for grabs when the event takes place this weekend, from January 28th – 29th.

Competitive Fortnite players will be fighting for half of the prize money over the coming weekend, with a qualifying event being held on Saturday before the final Solo competition on Sunday with the best 80 competitors from the previous day and 10 wildcard entries.

A creator event will occur on Sunday before the competitive final. The Summer Smash Creator series will see teams with Content Creators and streamers Lachlan, Loserfruit, and LazarBeam battling it out to win the other half of the prize money, which will go to a charity of their choice.

Here is the program for the weekend:

  • Saturday, 28 January, 1-5 PM AEDT – Competitive Qualifying Round

  • Sunday, 29 January, 11-1 PM AEDT – Summer Smash Creator Series

  • Sunday, 29 January, 1 PM AEDT – Competitive Final Round

Catch all the action on the Australian Open Twitch and YouTube each day.
