The Demon’s Souls remake won’t be using ray tracing of any kind when it releases on November 12th alongside the PlayStation 5.
Bluepoint Games creative director Gavin Moore recently told Level Up in an interview that the game wouldn’t be using ray tracing at all. He even went on to say that it was never a feature that was on the table.
“It’s not because we couldn’t or because the PlayStation 5 couldn’t do it, it’s fully capable of doing it. It’s like any other graphical enhancement, there is a cost [to implement ray tracing]. If we had implemented ray tracing in the game, that would mean that we would have had to leave something out. There is a limited time in game development.”
Given how stunning the game looked in a video released by PlayStation last week, I don’t think there’s any need to be worried here. Ray tracing would have been a very taxing feature for the game and I’m sure nearly all players would have opted to turn it off in favour of a performance mode even if it was part of the game.
