Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Resonance as the first HD-2D game in the Final Fantasy series.

Revealed during the Nintendo Direct on Monday, the game combines classic Final Fantasy elements with modern visuals, using the same HD-2D style popularised by games such as Octopath Traveller and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

You can watch the announcement trailer below:

The game features a new story centred around Crystals, returning to some classic Final Fantasy roots, alongside a turn-based battle system. There are also signs of more classic Final Fantasy staples, including chocobos, espers and airships.

Interestingly, there are some twists as you’ll encounter iconic Final Fantasy characters, including Cloud Strife, Tidus and the Warrior of Light during the game.

How all this comes together into one package is the confusing part, as Square Enix has said that the game’s first story arc is based on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game. They’ve also said that Resonance has been extensively rebuilt as a “standalone console RPG” rather than a direct port of the mobile game.

Final Fantasy Resonance will be released on October 22, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
