Fortnite Chapter 4 officially launched this week, changing the map and adding new gameplay mechanics. The game has been updated to use Unreal Engine 5.1, showing off the latest tech behind Epic Games’ new engine.

A new island has formed following the events of Chapter 3’s finale, and it features interesting new locations like a castle called ‘The Citadel’ and, atop the snowy field, ‘Brutal Bastion.’ You can make your way between these locations on foot, on a dirt bike, or even within a snowball by attacking snow with your pickaxe.

A gameplay change for Chapter 4 is Reality Augments; players will be given a choice of randomly at intervals during your match. These can make you reload faster, give your glider redeploy, and make it, so your vehicles don’t need fuel. The longer you’re in the match, the more augmentations you’ll stack up.

There are a bunch of new weapons in Chapter 4, including the Ex-Caliber Rifle, Thunder Shotgun and more, including the Shockwave Hammer that launches yourself a distance.
As always, there’s a new Batte Pass to unlock in the new season, but this one features some new and exciting characters as the duo of The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia, and DOOM’s DOOM Guy are featured. Epic also teased that Hulk would be coming to Item Shop soon.

Unreal Engine 5.1 uses new features such as Nanite (building rendered from millions of polygons in real-time), Lumen (glossy reflections), Virtual Shadow Maps (highly detailed shadows) and Temporal Super Resolution (high visuals and keeps the high framerate) to make Fortnite look better than ever before on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Check out the images below for examples of how Unreal Engine 5.1 is improving and being used in Fortnite.
